A Polysomnographic Technician (Sleep Tech) works under the general supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and the clinical director (M.D., D.O., or PhD) or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders. This may involve polysomnography, diagnostic and therapeutic services, or patient care and education.

Sleep Technician must possess the ability to organize and manage time effectively, exercise independent judgment, assume responsibility for their own work/actions, and sometimes work under stressful conditions, remain focused, maintain the ability to prioritize and transition between tasks quickly. They must possess ethical judgment, integrity, honesty, dependability and accountability. Technician must be reliable and able to work independently. The technician is responsible for performing job functions in accordance with the mission, vision, and values of VA EKHCS. The major functions include, but are not limited to: Knowledge and performance of standardized polysomnographic concepts: a. EEG b. EOG c. EKG d. EMG e. Respiratory parameters f. Understanding of human anatomy Knowledge and performance of polysomnographic procedures: a. Ability to perform accurate polysomnographic procedures including: 1. Diagnostic PSG 2. Split Night PSG 3. CPAP Titration 4. BiPAP Titration 5. ASV Titration 6. MSLT 7. MWT 8. Positive Airway Pressure (PAP) Downloads 9. PAP Desensitization b. Patient instruction and education c. Explain pre-testing, testing, and post-testing procedures to the patient d. Patient set-up, calibration and acquisition performance verification e. Apply electrodes and sensors to meet accepted, published standards f. Perform appropriate physiological calibrations (biocalibrations) to ensure proper signals and adjust, if necessary. Performs pre-and-post calibrations. g. Follow "lights out" procedures to establish and document baseline values (body position, oxyhemoglobin saturation, respiratory rates, heart rates, etc.) h. Monitoring of multiple physiological data throughout the test i. Staging of the sleep studies j. Identify and treat sleep related breathing disorders k. Perform polysomnographic data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free and adjust, if necessary. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Medical Instrument Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-8 Experience. At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics related to the duties of the positions to be filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs: Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 1. Knowledge of the correct use of invasive patient monitoring equipment specific to anesthesiology. 2. Knowledge of basic electrocardiography (EKG). 3. Skill and ability to troubleshoot equipment, often while the patient is anesthetized. 4. Skill and ability to maintain sterility during procedures. 5. Knowledge and understanding of arterial pressure line wave forms including the ability to recognize and distinguish normal from abnormal, artifact from abnormality, and forewarn the physician or anesthetist of an impending life-threatening situation. 6. Knowledge of anesthesiology supplies, medications, and equipment appropriate to more difficult anesthetic procedures such as those found in inpatient settings with more acutely ill patients. Physical Requirements: Physical standards are identified in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing or walking for prolonged periods of time; frequent bending, reaching, stooping, and stretching to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; lifting and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects such as oxygen tanks and/or equipment. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average dexterity to perform intricate polysomnographic procedures.
