Position is located in Pacific Northwest Region, Region 6, Umpqua National Forest, Dorena Genetic Resource Center with a duty station of Cottage Grove, OR.
The incumbent serves as the Orchard Project Lead for the Five-Needle Pine Resistance Program at Dorena, supporting the development of orchards to meet Region's need for high-quality, rust-resistant seeds for reforestation and restoration.

Duties
Works closely with (and is supervised by) the White Pine Blister Rust Resistance Program Coordinator
Responsible for providing crew leadership to sustain on and off site orchard and test site evaluations for disease resistance, grafting, pollen collection, tree breeding, and cone collection of five-needle pine across OR and WA.
Works closely coordinating with partners outside the USFS as well as internal including Silviculture staff on forests and specialists in Insect and Disease and Genetics.
Has strong people skills and ability to be a team player and leader. Pays close attention to details.
Uses knowledge of tree improvement, forest genetics, and forest health to support the program.
Supervises one or more permanent technicians to support all aspects of the program.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09: Applicant must have one year specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level GS-08 in the Federal service: OR two full years (36 semester/ 54 quarter hours) of successfully completed graduate level education or master's degree if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (such as: forestry); OR combinations of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (in excess of 18 semester/27 quarter hours) and specialized experience.
Qualifying specialized experience is one or more of the following: Assisted with seed orchard or equivalent, establishment/maintenance operations, monitoring cone development, cone/seed crop harvesting, grounds, facilities, and equipment maintenance. Recorded growth and phenology and maintained detailed records. Provided technical assistance in the cultivation of trees such as ponderosa pine, Douglas-fir, rust-resistant sugar pine, white fir and/or seed in support of reforestation and restoration.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
