This WG-5823-08 Automotive Worker position is part of the Facility Maintenance Division located at Zion National Park in Springdale, Utah. This is a permanent, full-time position. Duties

Perform scheduled services on vehicles. These services include oil and filter changes, transmission service, differential flushes, power steering system flushes, and brake system flushes. These services are scheduled by mileage and are in accordance with manufacturer's recommended service schedule. Perform troubleshooting and subsequent repairs of various electrical and mechanical systems. The primary vehicle requiring attention are Dodge/Freightliner Sprinter Vans; other vehicles in the park's fleet may require attention during the period of performance. All repairs are to be completed using best practices and in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Perform shop maintenance and cleanup in accordance with industry safety guidelines and best practices. Keeping work areas neat and organized, care of tools and equipment, and reporting safety violations are necessary for safe and efficient operations. Customer service skills including scheduling and communicating directly with operators will be daily activities. Clear and concise communication to the operators and other mechanics is essential. Listening to and interpreting described faults from the operators in order to provide swift resolution to vehicle issues. Physical Demands: The incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and the work performed frequently involves standing for long periods of time, bending, stooping, crawling under vehicles, and making repairs in tight spaces. The incumbent frequently lifts, handles, and carries parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally moves moderately heavy items weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds) with assistance or with mechanical devices. This is a match to the physical effort described at the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the incumbent makes repairs which often require them to work in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions, and they frequently stand for long periods of time, bend, stoop, crawl under vehicles, and make repairs in tight spaces. They frequently lift, handle, and carry parts and equipment weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds), and occasionally they move moderately heavy items with assistance including objects weighing up to 23 kilograms (50 pounds). Working Conditions: Work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles, and occasionally the work is performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The incumbent is continually exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, and bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce the dangers and irritations the incumbent follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as safety shoes and glasses, and respirators. The working conditions of this position are consistent with the grade 8 level in the job grading standard. At that grade level the work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles with continual exposure to dirt, dust, and grease, and the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. Prescribed safety practices and the use of safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, and respirators are utilized to reduce dangers and irritations from these types of working conditions.

To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT). Ability is evidenced by clearly demonstrating, in your resume, experience performing common tasks under general direction in a full automotive service shop on passenger cars, pick-up trucks, and small equipment performing most or all of the following tasks: replaced spark plugs; replaced water hoses and installed water pumps; replaced brake pads; replaced accessory belts; and/or changed the oil on gas and diesel engines. (SCREEN OUT) Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading) Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Trouble shooting If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
