Duties

You will serve as a Health Physicist in the Naval Sea Systems Command Detachment, Radiological Affairs Support Office (NAVSEA DET RASO) located at Naval Weapons Station, Yorktown, Virginia. You will serve as a technical expert in support of the Navy's Nuclear Regulatory Commission-issued Master Materials License, as well as Base Realignment and Closure and Naval Facilities Environmental Restoration radiological remediation projects. You will provide for the protection of personnel and limiting exposure to the environment from the use of radioactive material and equipment producing ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. You will analyze and evaluate interrelated issues of radiation protection and environmental compliance including effectiveness, efficiency, and productivity of substantive Navy, Marine Corps and BRAC mission-oriented programs. You will provide advisory services and policy guidance on regulatory and enforcement issues concerning highly complex health physics and radiation safety issues.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the NH-2 broadband level (GS-11 equivalency) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: As a professional scientist applying knowledge and competence in the field of health physics to protect persons and their environment from unwarranted exposure to ionizing radiation. Examples of qualifying experience may include (1) expertise or demonstrated knowledge in nuclear or radiological sciences; (2) training and experience in the use of Residual Radiation (RESRAD), Visual Sampling Plan and Environmental Protection Agency Preliminary Remediation Goals (EPA PRG) calculator software; (3) knowledge and application of the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM); (4) knowledge and experience with Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) and/or Naval Facilities Environmental Restoration (NAVFAC ER,N) radiological remediation projects involving radium-226, cesium-137 and/or strontium-90. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualification requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual:
  • A degree in natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus; OR
  • A combination of education and experience -- courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described above.
