The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center is seeking a highly qualified candidate for a Biomedical Engineer position within the Research department in Wichita.
This position is Without Compensation (WOC) so there are no pay or benefits with the position.

Duties:
1) The incumbent functions as a design engineer for sponsored studies in the areas of rehabilitation engineering, prosthetics, orthotics, spinal cord injury, podiatry, orthopedics, and arthritis. The incumbent assists with communications between the local site investigator, the study sponsor, the IRB, other study sites, and regulatory bodies. Each study has unique requirements for protocol, management, budgeting, data collection and reporting, and monitoring of study activities that require coordination among the various agencies. The mission of VA research and development is to discover knowledge and create innovations that advance the health and care of veterans and the Nation.
2) The primary assignment for this position is design and evaluation of novel healthcare technologies including but not limited to adaptable prostheses, novel wheelchairs, and exercise equipment for veterans with disabilities. The incumbent is expected to perform a variety of specialized tasks and non-routine procedures with little oversight from the principal investigator or higher-level biomedical engineers. Although many of these assignments are covered by established methods, procedures and techniques, some require that new or modified techniques be developed for implementation in the laboratory. The incumbent seeks solutions to problems and acquires new methods from the literature or in consultation with others.
3) Expected to work with, and give technical guidance to, junior-level engineers, scientists, physicians, therapists, engineering students, and technicians at the MVAHCS.
4) Expected to work as a member of a team in planning and executing experiments on able-bodied and on disabled persons, as well as analyzing and publishing the data.
5) Research and acquire laboratory resources for state-of-the-art research testing techniques.
6) Perform a variety of engineering tasks to find solutions to difficult, previously unsolved problems.
7) Ensure data quality management.
8) Participate in manuscript preparation. 9) Maintain regulatory paperwork assuring compliance with regulations governing human subjects' research.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education and/or Experience. You must meet either item (1) or (2) below to meet this requirement:
(1) Bachelor's Degree or Higher in Engineering. To be creditable, the curriculum must be from a school of engineering with at least one
curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), as a professional engineering curriculum. Examples of acceptable engineering degrees include: Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering. Titles may vary from educational institutions and change over time. If qualifying based on education alone a copy of your transcript must be included with your application documents.
OR,
(2) Certification as a Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE) and a bachelor's degree not listed in item 3.b.(1) above.] If qualifying based on certification and education a copy of your certification and transcripts must be included with your application documents.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Physical Requirements: Technical, academic, and mental demands are high. The work performed is of a precise nature requiring prolonged concentration and must be able to lift and hold 40 (forty) pounds unassisted for mounting, positioning, or removing equipment. The incumbent may work under conditions of stress caused by the nature of involved work. Incumbent must be able to interact effectively with all levels of medical center staff and must remain calm, professional, and analytical even under stress.
