This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the activities of paramedics and emergency medical technicians assigned to the Fort Campbell Emergency Medical Services.
Duties
Independently establishes policies and procedures according to Emergency Medical System standards of practice and resolves administrative and clinical problems.
Establishes and provides necessary continuing education for emergency medical technicians and paramedics.
Directs the primary functions of emergency response, to include administering basic and advanced emergency care.
Ensures that the work of the section is organized and scheduled to assure expeditious handling of emergencies on all shifts.
Schedules performance of routine maintenance on all vehicles by contacting appropriate personnel to ensure support is rendered on an expeditious basis.
Develops inspection checklists and conducts a formal monthly inspection of vehicles dispatched to Ambulance Section, Medical Department Activity (MEDDAC) elements.
Requirements
- You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
- Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position has specific initial background investigation and periodic re-verification requirements since its duties require interaction with children and youth under the age of eighteen (18) years of age on a recurring basis.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- Incumbent must maintain a valid driver's license.
- Incumbent may be required to work rotating shifts and weekends.
- A uniform is required.
- This position requires Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel approximately 5% of the time away from your permanent duty station.
- Incumbent must maintain certification to meet National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians Standards.
- Newly appointed civilian EMTs who are not NREMT-certified will possess EMT certification from the State in which the employing Medical Treatment Facility (MTF) is located and any neighboring State(s) in which emergency responses are required.
- Employees who do not have the NREMT certification will be given up to 1 year to obtain national certification.
- This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs.
- This position is supervisory as defined by the Office of Personnel Management's (OPM) General Schedule Supervisory Guide (GSSG). A one year probation to assess your ability to perform supervisory duties is required unless previously completed.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Assessing the condition of patients and diagnostic signs in order to establish priority for emergency care; 2) identifying training needs for personnel and providing training to personnel as necessary; and, 3) performing a variety of difficult paraprofessional medical tasks on an emergency medical team and accompanying the ambulance to an emergency site. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
