About the Position: The installation rests in the beautiful 'hill and lake' country of Central Texas between Killeen and Copperas Cove and is approximately 60 miles north of the capital city of Austin, 50 miles south of Waco, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 150 miles north of San Antonio.

Duties

Serves as a wildlife technician responsible for managing technical aspects of the Natural Resources Management Program to include logistic support. Responsible for implementing current practices and procedures and adapting new ones to enhance and improve all programs. Responsible for assisting professional wildlife and Natural Resource personnel with the Natural Resources Management Program to include wildlife management, iSportsman and recreation program support, and control of non-native invasive species. Incumbent is responsible for the use of all safety procedures and use of all safety equipment by all personnel under his/her direction at all times. Operates a variety of motor vehicles such as 1/4-ton 4x4 utility trucks, 1/2 to 5-ton cargo trucks, ramp trucks, farm tractors and crawler tractors. Operates boats with outboard motors. Responsible for ensuring that equipment is properly maintained and repaired. Performs operator maintenance on all equipment used including vehicles on a daily basis.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.
  • Position is subject the Lautenberg Amendment. This act bans individuals convicted of misdemeanor domestic violence and certain others from possession or access to firearms or ammunition.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position has a requirement to lift up to 50 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
  • Work requires considerable physical exertion on a regular and recurring basis such as, 1) using a chain saw, Pulaski, or shovel on a fire line, 2) restraining captured deer or hogs for placement of tracking collars, (continued below)
  • 3) loading and unloading 50 lb. bags of feed and seed, 4) carrying ladders and equipment over rough and uneven terrain for distances up to 1/4 mile. Direct interaction with, including the handling of wildlife should be expected.
  • Employee will be required to handle firearms and ammunition when in the field.
  • The duties of this position require the incumbent to possess or obtain and maintain a valid state Driver's License in one of the 50 U.S. states or possessions to operate vehicles.
  • The following immunizations are required: Tetanus and Rabies Prophylaxis.
