This notice is issued under direct-hire authority to recruit new talent to occupations for which NIST has a severe shortage of candidates.
Duties
In this position, you will:
Manage a team of physicists and engineers contributing to experimental aspects of an ongoing effort to develop and apply advanced single-photon sensors for time-resolved emission microscopy (TREM) within the CHIPS R&D program.
Interface with semiconductor manufacturing partners to identify and accommodate device metrology needs that are critical to the industry.
Conduct a combination of basic and applied research to support the project.
Develop techniques for testing, verifying, and utilizing novel single-photon sensors, in collaboration with partners at other government agencies and labs.
Contribute to experimental operations in the laboratory environment (free-space optics, fiber optics, electrical and optical test equipment) to keep projects moving forward.
Oversee the implementation, calibration, and usage of an optical apparatus capable of collecting light from semiconductor test devices and coupling it into a cryostat for single-photon detection.
Work with private entities to facilitate commercialization and practical usage of this technology on an aggressive timescale.
Conduct research and explore new applications of this technology that will bring value to the American semiconductor device industry.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least 1 year (52 weeks) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS 12 level (ZP-III at NIST). Specialized experience includes: Design and execution of test & evaluation procedures for photonic and/or electronic integrated circuits. Principal investigator for significant projects in photonics, electronics, or metrology. Experience with sophisticated fiber-optic based systems for signal processing.
