This position is in the Pipefitter Shop of Facility Management Service, located in the VA Loma Linda Health Care System (VALLHCS). The Pipefitter repairs and maintains water, sewer, steam, natural gas, medical gas, and fire sprinkler systems; including: hot water heaters, regulating valves, fixtures, and back flow devices. The Pipefitter is required to read blue Prints and read and interpret instructions, and specifications related to pipe fitting.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to:
Repairing and maintaining water, sewer, steam, natural gas, medical gas, and fire sprinkler systems; including: hot water heaters, regulating valves, fixtures, and back flow devices.
Read blue Prints and read and interpret instructions, and specifications as related to pipe fitting.
Repair and installation of domestic water systems; fire sprinkler system piping; repair of valves, regulators, filter systems, toilets, sinks, and associated piping.
Performs plumbing and steam fitting work necessary in the installation of equipment.
Assists with the installation/repair of mechanical pumping systems; including, sump pumps, brine pumps, condensate pumps, and pulverizing systems.
Have knowledge of medical gas systems.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Incumbent must be able to lift and handle heavy objects that weigh up to 40 pounds while installing, repairing or assembling various pipefitting and plumbing fixtures, piping and equipment items. Required to stand, crawl, stoop, kneel, climb on scaffolds, ladders, wet slippery surfaces, in cramped uncomfortable positions for extended periods of time.
Working Conditions: The incumbent will perform duties in a hospital environment, inside and outside the facility. Will also be required to work in utility tunnels, basements, and interstitial spaces while exposed to moving objects, sharp edges, with the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, burns and infections. Will occasionally be required to work in areas of bad smells and chemical fumes. Work assignments will require varied personnel contacts and communications which will be conducted in a polite, respectful businesslike manner. Harmony and cooperation within the unit is essential and expected.
