This position is located in the Southern Regional Office located in Atlanta, GA. This position serves as a Deputy Regional Forester, and is responsible for policy formulation, advice, and leadership in responding to complex issues regarding the management of the Region. Duties

Serves as full member of the Regional Forester Team in working with the Regional Forester and other Deputy Regional Forester(s). Involved in formulating and executing National Forest System and State and Private Forestry management. Promotes collaboration with others and provides Regional Leadership to identify solutions to complex issues, achieve effective and efficient management, and provide quality public service. Directs review activities for the purposes of maintaining oversight of program progress and determining compliance with policies and program objectives. Represents the Regional Forester in meetings, conferences and negotiations with other Federal and State agencies and with non-Governmental organizations and partners. Acts for the Regional Forester with delegated authority to take actions on all matters including, at times, committing the agency to a course of action on controversial administrative matters.

Requirements

  • New USDA supervisors must successfully complete all components of the required new supervisory training program before the end of their probationary period.

Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-15 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level. Specialized Experience is defined as one or more of the following: Has knowledge and demonstrated activities in public involvement and collaboration techniques to engage the public in identifying priorities and appropriate means of addressing issues; provided expert counsel to higher organizational levels concerning regional or state-wide natural resource program issues and their current and anticipated effects; exercised direct program responsibilities that included regional or state-wide program development, planning, budgeting, and identifying multicultural workforce and organizational needs to establish and meet priorities; developed and sustained relationships with external partners, members of the public, agencies, state and local elected officials, and tribal governments to anticipate and resolve conflicts and issues. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
