Duties
Maintains, repairs and installs masonry units and performs the full range of Masonry skills and techniques for work involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities
Maintains, repairs, alters and constructs exterior and interior surfaces and structures built of a variety of brick, block, stone, granite, concrete and other related materials
Plans, lays out all work as required, selects the proper tools, determines materials to be used, and performs full scale journeyman duties
Lays common, face brick and cinder block to contour of the object or in the form of walls, boilers, floors, manholes, catch basin drains and other related real property structures
Uses masonry units, mortar, plumb bob, trowel, brick hammer, brick or concrete cutting saw and other common hand tools of the trade
Performs the full range of Carpentry skills and techniques where accuracy, spacing and fit are essential and structural soundness and appearance is important
Constructs, alters, repairs, or modifies a variety of wooden structures such as framework, rafters, doors, floors, finished paneling, windows, interior and exterior trim, trusses, beams, overhead door panels, etc
Plans and lays out work in accordance with drawings, sketches, blueprints, diagrams, etc.; determines the type of materials required; selects the sizes and kinds of lumber and supplies
Measures, cuts, fits, shapes, replaces and installs studs, joints, door headers, trim and finish work
May perform other related tasks such as cutting, fitting and installing countertops made of various commercial materials and when required, uses plasters, stucco, drywall, joint tapes and spackling to install, repair and finish wall units
Operates heavy equipment, such as but not limited to Front loaders, backhoes, skid steers, bull dozers and similar equipment for the purpose of preparing and executing masonry work orders
Operates box plow during snow removal events

- You will be a Emergency Employee. This requires you to work during an emergency to ensure continuation of essential functions. You may be required to work at the designated duty location, a telework site, or an alternate location/facility.
Qualifications
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Physical Effort:
Frequently required to lift and carry bricks, block, stone, granite, mortar, cement, sand and lumber weighing up to 90 pounds. Lifting devices and equipment are available to assist in the movement of materials to and from worksites. Requires considerable standing, stooping and bending. Works on ladders and scaffolds, in trenches and ditches, requiring overhead or below grade work or in stretched, cramped or awkward positions. Considerable arm movements are required when nailing and using such tools as trowels, sanders, planners, hand saws, floats and other tools used in the trades.
Working Conditions:
Works in shop and outside in a variety of weather conditions. Subject to falls, slips, cuts and bruises due to the nature of the work and exposure to saw dust, cement dust, dirt and other residual inhalants from materials used in the trades. On an intermittent basis, the incumbent will be required to report for duty during the night or on weekends to perform snow or ice removal duties as a member of the DES-CI snow removal crew. These duties will require the operation of tractor with snow blade, truck (up to 5-ton) with snow blade and salt spreading attachments or front end loader and other specialized equipment. Incumbent will be required to successfully complete operator training and testing to maintain a Government License for all of these equipment items.
