Duties
You will serve as an Engineering Technician and be responsible for serving as a key member supporting project managers and engineers in the execution of the Research and Development portfolio. Duties and responsibilities include Lead Field Test Technician, Laboratory Technical Manager, and Laboratory Equipment Manager, providing testing and engineering support to the various projects in the R&D portfolio which include elements of all 11 Coast Guard missions and a multidisciplinary ability/understanding in the fields of sensors, maritime electronic and mechanical systems, communication systems, and data transfer systems.
Qualifications
You qualify for the GS-11 grade level, if you possess one year of specialized experience at the GS-10 grade level.
methods and techniques of engineering or architecture; and
construction, application, properties, operations, and limitations of engineering systems, processes, structures, machinery, devices, and materials.
You qualify for the GS-12, applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level.
Examples of specialized experience would be to perform detailed designs and participate in design tradeoff studies. Examples of occupations that could provide specialized experience include: draftsperson, surveying technician, construction estimator, physical science technician, or mathematical technician. In addition, experience in a trade or craft may be credited as specialized experience when the work provided intensive knowledge of engineering principles, techniques, methods, and precedents. Examples are trade positions with substantial developmental, test, or design responsibilities such as: planner estimators who analyzed designs for production
purposes: or instrument or model makers who perform design or development work on devices fabricated.

Specialized experience must include the following:
Knowledge of engineering methods and techniques.
Practical knowledge of the methods and techniques of engineering applications.
Knowledge and skills sufficient to prepare and conduct testing, maintenance, trouble shooting and repair procedures for electronics equipment
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and writing with all levels of personnel
Ability to clearly read and interpret engineering and architectural plans and specification.
Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
NOTE: Education cannot be substituted for experience at this grade level.
