This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Domestic Defense Industrial Base (DIB) Facilities in the Department of Defense to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is with the Joint Munitions Command located at Tooele Army Depot.
Duties
Serves as an Air Conditioning Mechanic at the Tooele Army Depot and the Deseret Chemical Depot to perform a variety of duties concerned with the installation,
Repairs, services, and modifies special-purpose refrigeration and environmental units and systems used to air condition buildings.
Diagnoses a wide variety of malfunctions pertaining to two-stage refrigeration, complex chilled water systems, high altitude test systems, capacity modulated centrifugal and reciprocating compressors and associated equipment
Repairs, alters, and installs climatic equipment by replacing such parts as electronic or pneumatic transmitters, electronic or pneumatic hydrostat, flow-rite mix valves, power stroke or electric motors, etc.
Charges and energizes into systems refrigerants such as Freon-11, Freon-12, Freon-22, Freon-113, Freon 502 and the experimental Freon-13.
Installs and/or moves equipment.
Repairs, overhauls, maintains, services, and performs preventive maintenance to a variety of large and special-purpose equipment.
Installs, repairs, rebuilds, applies modifications to and makes performance tests on a variety of electronic equipment (complete systems, assemblies, and subassemblies), and controls.
Troubleshoots, overhauls, rebuilds, maintains and repairs utilities support-installed air compressors powered by electrical motors (located throughout the depot).
Install, modifies, and repairs electrical wiring systems; related switches, fixtures, distribution panels, and outlet boxes; and a variety of electrical appliances.
Requirements
- Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
- Requirement to have his/her name on a call out list and be called back to work during non-duty hours (including weekends) to support emergency situations or make emergency repairs.
- Requirement to work in a chemical limited area. Within six (6) months after the date of appointment to this position the employee must meet and maintain all requirements for the Unescorted Access Program.
- Requirement to handle hazardous waste and must successfully complete training in hazardous waste management procedures within six (6) months after appointment to this position
- Occasionally may be required to work with and around asbestos materials.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 5% of the time
- Requirement to have, or obtain within 6 months after job appointment, 608 (freon) certification.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic ~ without more than normal supervision.
1 - Assisting with the installation of industrial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
2 - Assisting with the maintenance of industrial air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
- Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate to strong physical effort required due to the size of the equipment involved. Mechanic frequently lifts, carries, and sets up parts and equipment weighing up to 45 pounds, occasionally heavier weights with assistance. Often make repairs from ladders, scaffolding, platforms, and hard-to-reach places requiring bending, kneeling, and stooping. Subject to frequent cramped and awkward positions. Work requires prolonged standing and continuous movement of hands and arms.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works inside and outside in all kinds of weather. Subject to sudden temperature changes when checking or working on refrigeration units. There is frequently exposure to dirt, dust, grease, noise, odor, smoke, and possibility of toxic fumes. Protective clothing or devices, including uncomfortable respirators or masks are occasionally required. May be exposed to explosive munitions. Subject to burns, cuts and electric shock. Exposure to prolonged, repeated, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic affects to eyes, skin or internal organs.
