This position works in the Interpretation and Education Division at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Munising, Michigan. The purpose of the position is to carry out the education specialist duties.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES:
Teaches and oversees the day-to-day operations of the park's education program. Coordinates the development, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary curriculum-based education programs for school groups to meet the Michigan State Standards and support place-based education in a nearshore Great Lakes environment. The programs contain pre-site, field visit, and post-site components. Collaborates with professional educators to ensure that materials meet the needs of the park and the schools. Evaluates and selects the appropriate instructional methodology for all pre-K-12th grade programs.
Schedules, plans, and leads professional development or teacher workshops that trains on curriculum and prepares educators to bring their classes to the park, and to help teachers prepare and present programs about park and Great Lakes resources to their students.
Maintains partnerships with different agencies and groups such as U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and Michigan State University - Extension to support interagency curriculum-based programming.
Oversees youth-based community engagement and outreach programs either on or off site.
Maintains and inventories and makes recommendations for purchases of program supplies and equipment.
Area Information:
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is located in Michigan's Upper Peninsula on the south shore of Lake Superior between the communities of Munising (population 2,500). The duty station for this position is Munising. Amenities in Munising include basic shopping, medical facilities, and K-12 schools. Basic shopping and medical facilities are available in Munising. Summers are generally warm and pleasant. The winter season may extend from October to May and is often characterized by cold temperatures and seasonal snowfall in excess of 140 inches. The area is rich in outdoor sporting activities including hunting, fishing, hiking, boating, biking, camping, and skiing. Government housing is not available.

Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately 12/28 to 12/15 and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Qualifications

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

EDUCATION: a degree that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position

COMBINATION: Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in A above.

Along with the basic requirement above, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement to qualify at the GS-9 level:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). This experience includes activities such as: professional level experience in conducting and applying experiential education techniques and methods, organizing work, setting priorities, and determining resource requirements, determining short and long term goals and strategies to achieve them, coordinating with other organizations or colleagues to accomplish goals, monitor and evaluate progress. Providing oversight of curriculum-based education programs and staff. You must include hours per week worked.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution in education, educational leadership, general psychology, human development, teaching methods at the elementary or secondary learning level. Areas of major study include education, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, social sciences, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. You must include transcripts.

COMBINATION: I do not have the amount of specialized experience and/or graduate or higher-level education described above; however, I do have a quantity of specialized experience and graduate or higher-level education of the type described above that when combined, the total percentage equals at least 100 to qualify for the position. NOTE: Only graduate education in excess of the first year maybe combined with experience to qualify applicants for positions at the GS-09 grade. PLEASE NOTE: If you are using education to qualify you must submit a copy of your transcripts (A copy of your official transcripts will be required before entrance on duty, if selected).
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an
accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using
education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
