You will serve as a Carpenter in the Public Works Office of NAVFAC ENGINEERING CMD MID-ATLANTIC located in Great Lakes Illinois. NAVFAC MIDLANT is a regionalized command. The incumbent serving in this position may at any time be reassigned to a similar position at any site or workstation within the commuting area as a condition of employment,

Duties

You will interpret drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or related materials. You will set up and operate a wide variety of wood working machines and tools, such as , routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses. You will disassemble, replace, or remove worn or damaged items such as rollers, latches, hinges, damaged desk and tabletops, bent or crooked arms and legs. You will install door and window sashes and apply caulking, compound, or other filler material around door and window casings and at other points where tight seal is required. You will use advance shop mathematics to plan, compute, and lay out complex and exact projects (e.g., arcs, tangents, and circles.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Constructing and repairing wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close fit and structural soundness such as building frames, rafters, concrete forms, walls, staircases, door and window frames, and interior and exterior trim; 2) Interpreting drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine the layout and work sequences and types of lumber or special related materials needed; and 3) Operating power and hand tools and other woodworking equipment such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shavers, tenoners, sanders, routers, combustion type saws, drill presses and table saws.
