About the Position: Serves as a Range Facility Operations Specialist for the Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Fort Wainwright or Donnelly Training Area with the responsibility of oversight, maintenance, and safety of range and training site operations dispersed over a large military installation approximately 1.6 Million acres.
Duties
Operate target systems for automated ranges in the training complex during day and night-time live-fire training scenarios.
Monitor and evaluate target systems to determine serviceability and identify system faults and prepares recommendations for new maintenance and repair schedules, processes, and procedures.
Ensure range operations are conducted in accordance with Range Safety and other applicable regulations.
Operate and maintain Transportation Motor Pool (TMP) vehicles to support range mission functions, carrying one or more passengers on a daily basis.
Use various vehicles and/or attachments to travel, remove snow, and mow grass around work sites, on ranges and training areas.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must obtain and maintain a State driver's license within 90 days as duties will include operation of motor vehicle throughout the range complex.
- This is a drug testing designated position. Drug testing requirements is mandatory prior to being placed into this position and periodic random drug testing thereafter.
- Subject to Recall or may be required to report for duty during adverse weather or in times of national disaster to preclude additional loss or damage to resources at the range facility.
- Subject to an irregular tour of duty, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays and shift work necessary to cover 24 hour-a-day, 7 days per week operation.
- May be subject to performing Temporary Duty travel (TDY) at other than the primary worksite as mission dictates (Less than 25% of time).
- May be required to pass the Range Operations Professional Development course, Inter-Service Range Safety Course (Intermediate) within one year of employment IAW Training Circular TC 25-8, Training Ranges.
- Must have normal depth perception and color vision.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in the operation of range live fire training AND the ability to build scenarios, up-loads and modify computer software for controlling target exposures. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-07).

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: engineering, industrial arts, property management, or business administration. OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent GS-07.
Education
