About the Position: As lock leader for 1-3 locks, directs and oversees the work of four or more subordinate Lock and Dam Operators during the navigation season. Works along with other workers and sets the pace. Obtains needed information or decisions from supervisors on problems that come up during the work. Sees to it that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy.

Duties

Directs and controls vessel lockage by passing signals to vessel operators and lock personnel. Directs the vessel officers in entry speed, areas of non-use of thrusters and propellers, and in the use of winches in lieu of propellers as required under certain conditions and canal regulations. Strives to achieve the precise mitering of the gates. Directs the handling and exact placement of mooring lines and the proper locations of vessel or vessels during lockage. Insures safety procedures are followed by line handlers. Operates electrical or computer based valve controls controlling the flow of water for filling and emptying lock chambers. Operates electrical or computer based controls to lower and raise protective wire rope gate fenders, placed to prevent damage to lock gates by vessels not under control. Responsible for maintaining the grounds, walls sidewalks, railings, life buoys, etc. of the lock facility.
