About the Position: This position is with the U.S Army Sustainment Command, 404TH Army Field Support Brigade, Logistics Readiness Center, located in JBLM, WA.

Duties

Operate diesel electric locomotives to transport various items throughout the installation. Inspect locomotives daily ensuring all components are functioning properly. Transmit instructions via two-way radio to ensure accurate movement of the train. Observe safety rules/regulations diligently to prevent injury to personnel or damage to property. Prepare daily reports on locomotive operations.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
• This position has a requirement to lift up to 45 lbs. in the regular performance of duties.
• This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 10% of the time.
• This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain Military Conductor Card or Commercial Railroad Conductor Card within 1 year from the date of employment.
• This position requires the incumbent to obtain and maintain Locomotive Engineer certification within 1 year from the date of employment and recertify every 3 years.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

They continuously manipulate hand-operated controls while stretching, turning, and shifting position for best visibility. The locomotive engineers are also subject to physical strain from swaying motions and jarring movements, particularly when coupling cars and running on rough track. Working Conditions: The locomotive engineers work in a cab which is often hot or cold. They are sometimes exposed to bad weather, particularly when operating with an open cab window. They are exposed to unpleasant fuel exhaust fumes and to jarring, jolting, and swaying movements. The locomotive engineers are continuously exposed to loud noise from engine operation, train whistle, and horn. They are exposed to possible injuries from accidents.
