The primary purpose of this position is: To serve as a lifeguard and perform other related swimming facility duties.
Duties
Monitors activities within assigned swimming areas.
Rescues and resuscitates individuals in danger of drowning and renders first aid to injuries.
Assists in cleaning and maintaining the swimming facility.
Performs gate control duties. Verifies that customers are authorized to use facility by checking appropriate identification.
Assists water safety instructor in conducting swimming lessons. Participates in required in-service training and maintains currency, capability, and certification to perform lifesaving and water rescue, and to administer basic first aid and CPR.

- Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized lifeguard certification covering lifesaving and water rescue methods, skills, and procedures
- Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized basic first aid certification
- Must possess a current and valid nationally recognized CPR certification which includes adult, child, and infant procedures
- Position requires pre-employment screening for swimming ability, rescue skills, and CPR skills
- Participation in required in-service training and maintenance of physical capabilities to perform rescues throughout the period of employment are conditions of employment for this position (con't)
- (con't) All certifications must remain current during the period of employment
- If position is identified as having “regular contact with children” (e.g., youth swim lessons instructor) in accordance with public law, a criminal background check must be completed
- Some physical exertion is required in effecting a swimming rescue. Must be able to lift and carry 45 pounds and over. (con't)
- (con't) Much of the time is spent sitting, standing, or walking; however, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, kneeling, or reaching is required. A physical may be required. A pre-employment physical is a condition of employment
- May be required to work other than normal duty hours which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays
- This is a drug testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions, Technical and Medical Support Positions, Recreation Aid and Assistant Series, 0189.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must have at least 3 months of general experience in any type of work that demonstrates ability to perform the work of the position or is experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. NOTE: YOUR RESUME MUST SUPPORT THIS STATEMENT IF CHOSEN.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. NOTE: YOU MUST SUBMIT PROOF OF HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION IF USING EDUCATION AS A SUBSTITUTION FOR EXPERIENCE.

COMBINATION OF EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. NOTE: You must submit a copy of your transcripts.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Basic knowledge of lifesaving, first aid, and CPR as would be learned through an approved course leading to certification.
2. Limited knowledge of swimming facility rules, work procedures, equipment, and materials to perform standing, recurring tasks.
3. Ability to communicate effectively, orally.
4. Demonstrated current physical ability to swim to and rescue swimmers of all age groups up to and including adult and to administer CPR to adults, children, and infants.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
