This Position is in the Construction, Maintenance & Operations section of the Facilities Management Service (FMS) which covers the Seattle & American Lake Campuses & associated CBOC's and Valor's of VA Puget Sound Health Care System (VAPSHCS).
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to the following:
Performs as a journeyman level painter/drywall taper and is proficient in the use of the tools of the trade such as drywall knives, rollers, paint-brushes, paint colorant dispensers, striping machines, sanding and scraping tools. Incumbent must use the application of a variety of coating materials (paint, varnishes, lacquers, drywall compound, and wallpaper) with brushes, rollers, trowels, spray guns and other related methods and techniques to repair and finish wood, metal, drywall, concrete, pavement and other materials is a necessity.
Accomplishes work by using any of the accepted methods of the trade including marbling, graphics, veneer plastering, and drywall taping by using coating materials that are prepared in special as well as common ways and by applying coating techniques that ensure surfaces have a smooth or textured and decorative appearance and meet thickness and level requirements.
Coordinate the work tasks with other Medical Center employees and in particular, carpenters. Incumbent accomplishes such tasks as drywall taping and veneer plaster of newly constructed and existing walls, application of finishes to doors and other surfaces. Incumbent replaces broken glass in window panes, cabinets, fire alarm boxes, hose cabinets and doors.
Interface with all medical center staff and patients as many tasks are performed in staff offices and patient rooms. It is vital to conduct oneself in a professional manner at all times.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent prepares and coats surfaces from ladders, scaffolds and platforms, and where the surfaces to be coated are in cramped and hard to reach places. This requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for long periods of time. The incumbent frequently lifts, carries, and sets up materials and equipment that weigh up to 10 pounds and occasionally over 50 Pounds. Incumbent must be able to be physically cleared to wear a respirator.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. The screen-out element is the ability to perform the duties of a Painter without more than normal supervision. Duties include knowledge and experience of accepted surface preparation and coating methods and plastering techniques; knowledge of how to build up, shape, and level surfaces with synthetic resins, plastics, and patching compounds, fire stopping compounds, and obtain finely smoothed surfaces with abrasive compounds; makes independent judgments and decisions within the framework of oral and written instructions and accepted trade practices, processes and procedures while working on assigned projects; knowledge of the use of the tools and materials of the trade including stationary woodworking equipment and leveling instruments; knowledge and observance of all safety and infection control rules and regulations pertaining to working in a hospital environment in order to prevent injury to self or others, particularly patients. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated.
