This position is located within, Commander, Mid-Atlantic Region, Fleet and Family Readiness Program. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties necessary for the maintenance of the Golf Course greens, tees, fairways, rough and adjacent areas to keep them in the best possible playing condition. Incumbent will report directly to the Maintenance Supervisor, however, during the Golf season will be assigned to the Golf Program.
Duties
MAJOR DUTIES DURING GOLF SEASON:
Operates, or may learn to operate all types of power turf maintenance equipment including but not limited to tractors with pull-behind gang mowers, bush hogs, grading blades, aerator, drag mats and other attachments; tractor loader/backhoes , out front rotary mowers, push mowers, brush cutters, power reel mowers, power sand trap rakes, verticulters, seeders, pick-up and dump trucks, trucksters, etc. Operates a variety of equipment such as weed eaters, chain saws, chippers, hedge trimmers, blowers, tillers, edgers, etc. Service equipment before use; may do minor repairs and adjustments as necessary. Cleans equipment after use.
Cultivates greens by aerating, top-dressing, preparing ground for sod or seed and installing same, installing and maintaining flower beds and assists with the maintenance, repair and installation of irrigation system lines, sprinkler heads and low voltage electric lines and switches associated with automatic irrigation systems. Assists with the maintenance of drainage systems, and/or construction tee and other course features.
Performs a variety of golf course maintenance tasks as necessary such as changing cups and moving tee markers, removing trash, mowing greens, tees, collars and aprons, fairways greens and tee banks, rough and adjacent areas; raking and edging bunkers; removing leaves and debris; hand watering greens and other areas. Uses all types of hand tools such as rakes, shovels, hoes, axes, etc. Cleans building interiors, including bathrooms and replenishes supplies as necessary. Paints interior spaces; repairs and paints course accessories during the off-season. May be assigned as crew leader for assigned tasks. Assists in training new employees in learning golf course tasks and the safe, proper operation of equipment.
Performs preventive maintenance on gas- and diesel-powered machinery and other types of mechanical equipment and hand tools used to accomplish assigned duties and responsibilities.
MAJOR DUTIES DURING THE OFF SEASON:
Responsible for performing general maintenance, repairs and/or alterations to such items as doors, floors/floor covering, walls, ceilings, windows, electrical switches receptacles and light fixtures, commodes, wash basins and showers, delivery and set up of canopies and supplies. Such assignments may include, but are not limited to: Plumbing repairs, removing, cleaning, resealing, replacing defective parts or units of utility, supply and disposal systems such as dirty traps, sections of broken tile, damaged or broken pipes, leaky faucets and stopped up drains. May be required to install water heaters, garbage disposals, faucets and sinks. Makes minor electrical repairs to switches and boxes, replaces electric lights, fuses and fixtures, light maintenance on air conditioning units and intermediate maintenance on facility equipment. Carpentry assignments typically include measuring, cutting constructing or repairing wood or wood substitute items such as scaffolding, staging parts, panels, pallets, concrete forms, dry walls, sheathing and roof decking. Painting assignments may consist of standard coating methods of painting such as brushing, rolling and spraying, by the use of coating materials that are prepared according to specific directions and by the supplication of coating techniques that ensure surfaces are fully coated, protected and free from drips and runs. Assignments may include loading and transporting equipment and materials to the job site, preparation of work, and clean-up after completion of work assignment. May assist with set-up/break down of events or special projects. Observes required safety, sanitation and hazardous waste disposal rules and regulations. Operates vehicle to transport tools and materials to work site.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements

- Physical activities include, but are not limited to standing, walking, turning, twisting, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, climbing, hearing, seeing, smelling and lifting items weighing up to 45 pounds unassisted.
- Work is performed primarily outdoors working in direct sunlight frequently and subject to a variety of weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow and wind.
- Subjected to many conditions inherent to golf course maintenance including cuts, bruises, burns, scrapes and may come in contact with irritating plants, insects, employees and golfers
- Must be able to read, write and understand both written and verbal instructions, be a high school graduate or equivalent
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license
- This position is subject to an irregular tour, which may include weekend and holidays.
- Must possess and maintain a Virginia Registered Technician/Pesticide Applicator license and be able to calibrate, load, and apply all such product as necessary to promote turf health as it relates to a golf course environment.

A qualified candidate must possess:
Must be able to read, write and understand both written and verbal instructions, be a high school graduate or equivalent, and have a minimum 1 year documented experience in golf course maintenance. Must have a general knowledge of maintenance of fine turf, trees and ornamentals and have the ability to operate a variety of equipment pertinent to golf course maintenance. Ability to operate vehicles such as pick-up trucks and 5-ton dump trucks with manual transmission. Must have the ability to operate all types of turf maintenance equipment.
Education
Must have High school diploma or GED.
