This Position is located at the Salisbury VA Medical Center. The incumbent supervises the Building Maintenance Unit of the Maintenance and Repair (M&R) Section of Facilities Management Service.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities will include:
Provides technical and administrative supervision for Painters, Masons, Maintenance Mechanics, and Locksmiths. Incumbent establishes priorities and deadlines for all work orders. Incumbent motivates subordinates to operate as an effective working unit. Work of the incumbent has the following scope:
Completes all work orders for overall preventative maintenance and repairs throughout the medical center.
Plans work operations of greater scope and complexity: determining the sequence, priority, and time for the performance of particular operations.
Performs maintenance and repair of roofs, gutters, and downspouts; floors: ceilings; brick, block, marble, and ceramic tile; interior and exterior painting; plaster; and locksmith type work.
Conducts inspections and performing routine maintenance on area of responsibility assigned.
Uses skills from a variety of trades such as maintenance, plastering, locksmith, carpentry, and painting.
Determines service requirements, initiates request, turn in, and receipt for property or services.
Planning and measuring material according to requirements and dimensions outlined in instructions.
Measuring, cutting, constructing, or repairing wood or wood substitute items.
Measuring, cutting, and installing building components such as rafters, walls, and staircases.
Reads and interprets construction plans.
Technical knowledge and/or ability to search for and use information needed and required on subjects connected with job responsibilities.
Interpret VA Circulars, regulations, directives, engineering manuals, new construction methods, and other applicable federal, state, and local codes.
Operates general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce finished items with precise fits, accurate dimension, and acceptable appearance.
Performs preventative maintenance on shop tools and equipment to ensure safe and proper function.
Fabricates replacement parts which are not readily available to make repairs on tools and equipment.
Plan use of subordinate workers, equipment, facilities, and materials on a week-to-week or month-to-month basis.
Oversee the requisition of materials, tools, and equipment as necessary to perform assigned duties.
Assures that material is ordered, stocked, and delivered to the work site so as not to delay work.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 3:30 pm

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Periods of physical effort, such as climbing ladders and scaffolding and crawling in and under building during tours of inspections and performing journeyman level work as required. Incumbent is subject to call at all hours. May be subject to potential falls from ladders, scaffolding, or rigging while performing journeyman level work and/or during inspection of operations.
