About the Position: Serves as Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic performing repairs and troubleshoot to the full range of systems on heavy mobile equipment. This position is located at Fort Sam Houston, Texas

Duties

Repairs a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles, such as heavy combat equipment, and heavy special purpose vehicles and similar equipment. Receives work orders or oral instructions that indicate the nature of the repair. Conducts operator-level inspections on vehicles before and after own use as well as use by troops. Operates a variety of tactical and non-tactical motor vehicles. Analyzes malfunctions and determines the extent of repairs necessary by visual and auditory examinations and by the use of a wide variety of test equipment.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Employee must be able to obtain and maintain a valid commercial driver's license.
  • Incumbent must pass a physical examination to meet physical requirements for this position.
  • Incumbent is subject to random drug testing. This position is covered by the civilian drug abuse testing program.
  • Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R, Condition of Employment for certain civilian positions identified as critical positions identified as critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic without more than normal supervision. Perform repairs and maintenance for a variety of heavy mobile equipment and vehicles, such as heavy combat equipment; and heavy special purpose vehicles such as Stryker, Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP), Long Term Armor Strategy (LTAS) and similar equipment. I apply knowledge of electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and other non-mechanical systems to perform repairs in mechanical systems. I am skilled in operating a variety of tactical and non-tactical motor vehicles before and after maintenance and repairs. I diagnose, overhaul, and modify heavy mobile equipment, vehicles, and systems; utilize test equipment and basic tools to locate needed repairs, replace parts, components, and accessories. I am considered an expert and work with a high degree of independence. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Frequently works in tiring, awkward, and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, handles, and carries part and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds. Occasionally, moves moderately heavy item weighing up to or over 50 pounds with assistance or with mechanical devices. Working Conditions: The work is usually performed inside on concrete surfaces where there is exposure to heat, cold, drafts, noise, and fumes from vehicles. Floors may be wet. Occasionally, work is performed outside under adverse weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to dirt, dust, and grease, and to the potential for burns, chemical irritations, shocks, bruises, cuts, and strains. To reduce danger and irritations from these conditions, prescribed safety practices are followed and safety equipment such as safety glasses, respirators, and hearing protective devices are used.
