You will serve as a Section Head Interdisciplinary in the Space Systems Development Division, Code 811400 of NAVAL RESEARCH LABORATORY.

Duties

You will serve as the principal investigator on advanced research initiatives. You will identify and formulate system architectures and solutions for signal processing. You will design and prototype software for proof of concept and demonstration purposes necessary to enhance operational system capabilities. You will test and analyze results of algorithm changes associated with the fusion of large quantities information necessary to maintain situational awareness. You will participate in design reviews and technical meetings with NRL personnel and contractors.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11/13 grade level or pay band (NP-03) in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate most or all of the following: 1.) Researching, developing, and evaluating devices, designs, concepts, and techniques in radio-frequency, technical and operational Electronic Intelligence and Electro-Optical systems; 2.) Identifying and formulating system architectures and solutions for signal processing; 3.) Designing and prototyping software for proof-of-concept and demonstrating purposes necessary to enhance operational system capabilities; 4.) Participating in design reviews and technical meetings; and 5.) Building and maintaining technical skills at the forefront of the field in computational physics consistent with the overall section goals. For the 08xx series: Degree: Engineering. To be acceptable, the program must: (1) lead to a bachelor's degree in a school of engineering with at least one program accredited by ABET; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

Combination of education and experience -- college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

For the 1550 series:

Bachelor's degree in computer science or bachelor's degree with 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. At least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus. All academic degrees and course work must be from accredited or pre-accredited institutions.

For the 1310 series:
  1. Degree: physics; or related degree that included at least 24 semester hours in physics.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in physics totaling at least 24 semester hours, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In either A or B above, the courses must have included a fundamental course in general physics and, in addition, courses in any two of the following: electricity and magnetism, heat, light, mechanics, modern physics, and sound.
