This position is organizationally aligned under Facility Management Service (FMS), at the VA Illiana Health Care System VA Hospital (550), Danville, IL. The incumbent functions as a Gardner Leader within Grounds Section, Operations and Maintenance, Facility Management Division. Incumbent is considered a working leader. As such the incumbent is responsible for leading 7 FTEE- Tractor Operators WG-5705-06.
Duties
Responsible for leading and instructing other workers with the instructions received from supervisors and getting work started by assigning the immediate tasks to be performed
Seeing to it that needed plans, materials, and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
Maintaining a current knowledge, and answering questions of other workers on procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives (for example, technical orders)
Making sure that there is enough work to keep everyone in the work crew busy
Responsible for the maintenance of the grounds including horticultural and landscaping activities and serves as a working leader for the grounds section.
Landscapes areas, fine grades, fertilizes, seeds and sods areas as required.
Sprays trees and shrubs for the control of insects and disease and lawns for the control of weed growth.
Removes broken limbs from trees and completely removes dead or otherwise objectionable shrubs and trees and trims shrubs and edges lawns.
Serves as a working leader in the activities of the unit such as in snow removal and ice control work on the medical center roads, parking lot and walks, leaf removal work and other duties assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday; 6am - 2:30pm

Qualifications

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Your resume should include your experience for this position. Job experience includes inspecting the work of employees with regards to safe operation and maintenance of trucks, tractors and front-end loaders, lawn mowing, ice removal from roads, walks, etc, operate equipment for precise grade, follow federal and state rules when disposing of hazardous materials, and determine materials, parts and tools required to complete work and repairs for grounds equipment.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work requires moderate to heavy lifting, climbing ladders, pushing heavy loads and good eye, hand, and foot combination.
Working Conditions: Work is performed almost exclusively outdoors. As such, incumbent is exposed to the extremes of the weather, both heat and cold. Incumbent must exercise care when working with insecticides and sprays to prevent injury to eyes and skin. Incumbent is subjected to possible physical injury when operating powered equipment or from falls from ladders when doing pruning work. Incumbent is courteous and helpful to all persons he meets or with whom he/she comes in contact, including patients, employees, and visitors.
In this position, the incumbent is required to work in environments potentially containing dust, smoke, asbestos fibers, harmful vapors or other products that create a hazard to the employee's health. It is mandatory that all approved protective equipment be worn as directed and all procedures that have been or will be adopted by the VA be followed to protect the worker from all known health hazards. As a condition to his/her initial entrance on duty to this position, he/she must submit to and pass a physical examination, pulmonary function testing, respirator certification by the personnel physician and be fitted to wear a respirator. Incumbent's face must be clean-shaven in order to insure an approved respirator fit test.
