Duties

Major Duties Responsible for feeding proper types and amounts of rations in both front country and back country situations - insuring stock receive proper nutrition during times of heavy work and off times and they are fed properly on lieu days. Responsible for basic veterinary care of animals including but not limited to: worming, vaccinating, administering medication and dressing wounds. Responsible for recognition of more serious injuries/illness and coordination of required medical care. Responsible for performing farrier duties at regular intervals without causing injury to stock or people and ensuring stock is properly shod before heading into back country.. Responsible for safely leading strings of up to 8-head over rough mountain trails, requiring long days on the trail and spending up to seven consecutive nights camped in remote back country settings. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments but don't work on a year-round basis. Pay status will be for approximately 20 pay periods from early March through mid-November and will be in a non-pay status for one pay period from mid-November to the end of February. The position will be in non-pay status for one pay period the first service year. This may change for future service years depending on workload and budget; however, you will be notified by the supervisor in advance of any upcoming change to the non-pay period for the following year.

Ability to do the work of an Animal Caretaker (Packer) without more than normal supervision (Screen out). Work history demonstrates work experience as an Animal Caretaker (Packer) performing the following duties: feeding, caring for, and handling pack animals and saddle stock; transport stock animals; lead strings of pack animals on trails; camp overnight with stock; shoe stock; ability to lift packs weighing up to 100 pounds and loading them on pack animals.
