Duties
This position is located within the Department of the Interior, Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), Alaska Region, Office of Resource Evaluation, Resource Analysis Section, with duty in Anchorage, Alaska.
At the full performance level, GS-13 the major duties of this position include, but are not limited to the following:
Analyze and interpret geological and geophysical data and independently carries out detailed investigations that often have significant impact on science priorities for the Bureau/Office and/or Department. Investigations may involve but are not limited to: reservoir identification and classification, well log analysis and correlation, seismic and other geophysical data interpretation, subsurface mapping, developing geologic cross sections, national reserve and resource estimation, conservation of resources, lease sale evaluations for fair market value determination in areas of economic uncertainty, and worst-case discharge analyses for broad geographic areas.
Make geological observations, computations, and measurements. Determine adequacy of data collected, resolves unique or novel problems in collection methods by altering standard practices, equipment, and known techniques. Assess the validity of procedures and techniques to correct for errors and improve results.
Prepare or contribute to complex, technically authoritative reports on geologic and related studies which typically require development or application of new methods of field, remote sensing and/or laboratory investigation and that convey complex geologic, geomorphic, geochemical, biological, and/or hydrologic information.
Determine stratigraphic, structural, geochemical, framework geology, and magmatic or thermal evolution of terranes and reservoirs through mapping, field sampling, and/or compilation of existing geoscience data.
Keep abreast of state-of-the-art technological developments, provides significant and innovative recommendations for advancing program goals, and execute projects/investigations with impact on operating programs.
Develop and/or edit highly complex geologic maps employing multiple data collection and interpretation techniques for digital or print publication. Reports are frequently of intense interest to the scientific or resource management community and often serve as the basis for decision-making by Bureau and DOI management officials, resource managers, other Federal Agencies, state and local entities, and major industrial or commercial concerns.
Communicate findings in a variety of formats and settings. Make oral presentations in a full range of technical meetings, in some cases in support of enforcement activities as part of Federal oversight of regulatory programs. Serve as technical approval authority in accordance with Bureau and Department policies, directives, and standards.
Work with data sets from varied sources, including data published by various State, Federal, and International entities. Synthesize data using techniques such as meta-analysis, descriptive synthesis, and other methods of qualitative and quantitative syntheses depending on study type and expected end products.
BOEM has determined that this position is suitable for telework and may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
Salary Information (per year):
GS-09: $69,298 (Step 1) - $90,087 (Step 10)
GS-11: $83,844 (Step 1) - $108,995 (Step 10)
GS-12: $100,495 (Step 1) - $130,640 (Step 10)
GS-13: $119,502 (Step 1) - $155,357 (Step 10)
First time hires to the Federal government normally start at the lower salary range of the grade level.
Relocation or Recruitment Incentive may be authorized.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualification Requirements:
To qualify for this position, you must meet the (1) Basic Educational Requirements AND (2) Specialized Experience for the series/grade to which you are applying.
(1) Basic Educational Requirements: In addition to the minimum qualifications for this position, applicants must meet the Education Requirements described below:
Geologist GS-1350
A. Degree: geology, which included or was supplemented by 20 semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B. Combination of education and experience --course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education that totals 100%.

(2) Specialized Experience:
GS-09
To qualify for the GS-09, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
applying geophysical and geologic principles and practices to gather, analyze, and interpret data related to oil or gas resources.

Education: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.

Combination of education and experience: appropriate combination of education and experience that totals 100% of the requirement.
GS-11
To qualify for the GS-11, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
applying geophysical and geologic principles and practices to gather, analyze, and interpret data related to oil or gas resources; and
interpreting various types of geophysical and geologic data to produce prospect maps;
If qualifying on specialized, experience you must meet all.

Education: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree

Combination of education and experience: appropriate combination of education and experience that totals 100%. Note: Only graduate level education in excess of 36 semester hours may be applied toward the combination at this grade level.
GS-12
To qualify for the GS-12, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
applying geophysical and geologic principles and practices to gather, analyze, and interpret data related to oil or gas resources;
interpreting various types of geophysical and geologic data to produce prospect maps; and
analyzing the integration of geologic, geophysical, and/or engineering data necessary for evaluation of oil and/or gas reserves and resources.

GS-13
To qualify for the GS-13, you must possess at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service, or comparable experience not gained through Federal service. Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience is defined as demonstrated experience:
applying geophysical and geologic principles and practices to gather, analyze, and interpret data related to oil or gas resources;
interpreting various types of geophysical and geologic data to produce prospect maps;
analyzing the integration of geologic, geophysical, and engineering data necessary for evaluation of oil and/or gas reserves and resources; and
providing advice to management on geologic and geophysical analysis in the form of comprehensive written reports and/or oral presentations.
