You will serve as an ARCHAEOLOGIST in the Underwater Archaeology Branch of the Collection Management Division of NAVAL HISTORY AND HERITAGE COMMAND.
Duties
You will serve as the Underwater Archaeology Branch Historic Preservation and Field Operations Section Head and lead the section through performing a variety of regular and recurring duties.
You will plan, conduct, oversee, interpret, report, and publish on maritime archaeological fieldwork and material culture research in fulfillment of all applicable laws and federal regulations and Command priorities.
You will serve as a principal archaeological investigator on organic or collaborative missions, and oversee permitted activities pertaining to the search, survey, identification, documentation, and excavation of sunken and terrestrial military craft.
You will ensure regulatory compliance and engage in extensive consultations and collaboration on issues related to the management and research of Navy's ship and aircraft wrecks globally.
You will consult and collaborate with foreign governments, Department of Defense counterparts, federal and state agencies, and an array of stakeholders.
You will ensure digital data and hard copy documents associated with archaeological operations and cultural resource management responsibilities are appropriately organized and archived.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- Strenuous exertion may be required for periodic fieldwork operations, occurring on average a few weeks per annum, including diving, swimming, boat operations, mechanical and electrical machinery operations, exposure to sun, wind, rain and rough seas.
- Incumbent must maintain himself or herself in good physical condition with moderate to high physical strength in order to lift artifacts and equipment that may exceed 60 pounds in weight.
- Incumbent may be expected to complete a U.S. Navy Dive Physical and to undergo training in order to meet physical screening test requirements in preparation to pass the U.S. Navy Dive School Scuba Course.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector demonstrating an extensive knowledge of underwater archaeology and a broad understanding of archaeological conservation. I also have experience applying scientific analytical techniques and archaeological data interpretation. I am able to communicate well both orally and in writing. Examples of specialized experience must demonstrate: 1) Applying a knowledge of and experience with the scientific application of archaeology, including archaeological diving, for the research, management and preservation of submerged cultural resources; 2) Meeting federal statutory and regulatory historic preservation compliance requirements with regard to sunken military craft; 3) Leading maritime archaeological research projects as a Principal Investigator; 4) Reviewing or preparing cultural resource permit applications, grants, and/or technical reports; 5) Interpreting, developing, and presenting archaeological data for regulatory purposes, public outreach and education purposes; and 6) Utilizing a knowledge of basic classification, attribute description, measurement, and identification of archaeological artifacts, chemical and material processes, as well as site and artifact recording procedures.

Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).

College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.

Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
