The Procurement/Inventory Management Pharmacy Technician is responsible for assisting with inventory control for the Pharmacy Service at VASNHCS.

Duties include but are not limited to:
Incumbent ensures compliance with established inventory procedures and maintains effective internal control over the physical product flow and account of assigned pharmacy inventory.
Primary duties consist of serving as an ordering officer for ordering from the prime vendor contract and national blanket purchase agreements for pharmacy and use of a government purchase card for direct orders in accordance with contract requirements, VA policy and VA formulary requirements.
Duties include proper receipt of pharmaceutical drug and supply shipments, compliance with product storage requirements, assistance with inventory control through par level analysis, and assistance with the hazardous pharmaceutical drug program.
Incumbent functions in the capacity of a Pharmacy Technician in other pharmacy areas of staffing requirements dictate assisting the pharmacist in providing optimal pharmaceutical care and timely customer service in accordance with the mission, vision, and goals of the pharmacy and the medical center.
Incumbent is required to maintain current on Pharmacy Technician board certification and VHA privacy policy trainings as per VA employment standards.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification. Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is required.
English Language Proficiency. Pharmacy technicians appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 2, section D, paragraph 5a, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-08
(1) Experience. Candidates must possess one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level and demonstrate the KSAs below.
(2) Certification. For positions above the full performance level, the employee must pass a national certification exam and hold an active national certification through either:
(a) PTCB as a CPhT.
OR
(b) NHA as a ExCPT.
(3) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated:
(a) Basic knowledge of pharmacy procurement, distribution and storage requirements to maintain a safe working environment. This includes not limited to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), United States Pharmacopeia (USP) and DEA requirements and regulations.
(b) Ability to assist in determining and modifying as necessary: ordering intervals, inventory levels and cost-effective ordering quantities from required sources based on current financial conditions in pharmacy, seasonal variations in drug usage, changing patterns in medical practice, delivery time requirements and urgency of medical need.
(4) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSAs). In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs for all GS-08 assignments and meet any additional KSAs for the assignment, if indicated:
(a) Comprehensive knowledge of concepts, principles, methodology and policies in a specialized area or section of pharmacy (such as sterile compounding, controlled substances, automation, clinical pharmacy, contact center, etc.) Note: See Specialized Area.in the Definitions Section.
(b) Skill in training and orienting new and existing pharmacy facility employees and students on proper policies and procedures.
(c) Ability to evaluate, analyze and coordinate workflow and work activities within a specialized area or section of the pharmacy.
Preferred Experience: Previous experience with controlled substances and inventory management.

Physical Requirements: Physical movements involve completion of routine pharmacy functions which include but are not limited to; significant computer work/typing, prescription order entry and processing, contact of patients (both face to face and via phone). Certain tasks are repetitive in nature and require multiple steps performed in succession for success. The incumbent should be able to lift and carry up to 50lbs without significant difficulty. Incumbent must be able to stand or sit in one place for considerable time during completion of complex tasks. Complexity of mental processes involved in extensive, demanding, and challenging.
