This position is located on the Alaska Region, Region 10, Tongass National Forest, Yakutat Ranger District.
The incumbent serves as a technical assistant responsible for the collection, organization and analysis of fish habitat data on a National Forest.

Duties
Duties below are listed at the full-performance grade level, GS-07:
Collect samples and assist in the identification and assessment of any problems caused in support of research and management of fisheries.
Participate in the development of fisheries project plans.
Coordinate and implement fisheries projects, such as fish inventories, snorkel surveys, hydrological monitoring, stream restoration, and marking fish, following established protocols.
Prepare and submit related inspection reports for projects.
Assist in the collection, ordering, and analysis of biological and physical data in the aquatic environment.
Utilize topographic maps; photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions.
Establish inventory and maintenance requirements for fisheries equipment.
Act as point of contact for implementation of safety regulations and safe working conditions for fisheries projects.
Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen or National.

- This position requires initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
- The ability to obtain and maintain weapons certification is a condition of employment in this position as the incumbent will be required to carry a firearm.
- Passing a minimum background investigation, firearm classroom training, and annual shooting proficiency test is a condition of employment for this position.
Qualifications

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-06 grade level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as two or more of the following: Collected stream data, and prepared reports of findings with appropriate recommendations; AND/OR Utilized topographic maps, photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions; AND/OR Performed program support work for fisheries related projects which involved applying well-established procedures and required a number of sequential steps to complete the assignments such as planning daily activities, calibrating and operating a variety of complex equipment, collecting samples, and recording data.
For the GS-06 grade level: There is no substitution of education at this level.
For the GS-07 grade level: You must have one year specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 in the Federal service. Specialized experience is defined as three or more of the following: Participated in the development of fisheries project plans; AND/OR Conducted field studies and collected field data such as rearing habitat conditions, salmonid spawning, stream temperature and discharge measures, etc.; AND/OR Conducted fish, wildlife or habitat surveys; AND/OR Scheduling, servicing, calibrating, repairing, and installing fishery sampling gear.
OR
One (1) full year (18 semester-hours or equivalent) of graduate level education if the coursework is directly related to the work of the position (for example, fisheries biology program of study)
OR
Combination of graduate level education that is directly related to the position (fisheries biology program of study) and specialized experience that together meets the requirements of the position being filled. The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
