These positions are located within the Engineering Service at the Des Moines Veterans Health Care System.
Duties
Duties include but are not limited to the following:
Operates farm-type tractors and towed or attached equipment;
Uses mowers, aerators, plows, harrows, chippers, sprayers, disks, pot hole diggers, front-end loading devices, movable dozer blades and backhoes, and equipment that may be operated by direct drive or a power take off;
Operates heavy equipment;
Maintains facility grounds using specialized equipment; mowing areas to include hilly areas with steep grades, etc.,. using hand and power-operated equipment; This work includes building lawns, spreading lawn fertilizer, transplanting trees and plants, mulching and preparing flower beds, water lawns, pruning and trimming trees and hedges, and cutting grass;
Obeys all traffic laws and regulations and exercises appropriate precautions for weather conditions;
Operates transportation shuttle between facilities for employees and outpatients;
Provides assistance in the different craftsmen shops and throughout the medical center for moving furniture, equipment, etc;
Removes and disposes of garbage from exterior garbage receptacles, picks up and disposes of debris and garbage from roofs, steps, sidewalks, ground, and parking lots; and removes snow and de-ices parking lots. sidewalks, and steps;
Safely loads, and unloads passengers;
Completes preventive maintenance, adjustments and repairs to vehicles and ground maintenance equipment;
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications

PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The incumbent is subjected to long hours of driving vehicles and riding equipment. Manipulate equipment controls to compensate for difficult terrain. Perform exacting work (e.g. digging to close tolerances). Physical effort is required in reaching, bending, climbing ladders, crawling in cramped areas, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. The employee is required to handle objects one hundred (100) pounds and over requiring several people to coordinate lifting efforts. The incumbent is required to operate vehicles in congested traffic, confined areas, and all weather conditions. Work on steep slopes and in rough terrain and may be subject to injury from falls or overturned tractors and equipment. The incumbent is required to work in a large variety of weather conditions, which may vary from high temperature, humid summer days to cold, sub-zero winter days. The incumbent works in cramped and close quarters requiring bending and crawling. Also, work is performed at high rooftop elevations. The incumbent will be called during off duty hours to assist in snow removal, or transporting patients, and other assigned transportation duties. The incumbent must drive in all types of traffic, hazardous road conditions, and weather conditions. It may be necessary to cancel or reschedule the shuttle. This will be done by the
Grounds & Transportation section of Engineering Service.
