This position is located in Hoonah, AK. This position is on a Forest Service unit is assigned a variety of complex and recurring technical duties individually or as a crew member or leader, in support of unit resource management. Duties

Performs a variety of routine and frequently complex tasks involving techniques and practices relating to natural resources, i.e., water, land, food, plants, animals, and soils. Independently, or as part of a team, makes browse surveys; takes and records data, counts, sorts, identifies species, and performs measurements. Utilizes topographic maps; photographs, and data that identify a variety of natural resource areas and conditions. Utilizes a variety of tools to collect and record data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes. Identifies and classifies principal natural resource types in assigned geographic areas. Participates in developing new or improved prevention practices relating to conditons and findings of natural resource areas where information and data have been collected. Assists in layout of field experiments, pilot projects, impact evaluations, and specific natural resource projects. Is fully responsible for compliance with safety rules and regulations.

  • This position requires initial and continuing qualifications in the use of firearms as outlined in the Gun Control Act of 1968, amended by the Lautenberg Amendment of 1996.
  • The ability to obtain and maintain weapons certification is a condition of employment in this position as the incumbent will be required to carry a firearm.
  • Passing a minimum background investigation, firearm classroom training, and annual shooting proficiency test is a condition of employment for this position.

Specialized Experience Requirement: For the GS-0404-06: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as meeting two or more of the following : Analyzed natural resources information, and prepared reports of findings with appropriate recommendations; AND/OR Utilized topographic maps, photographs, and data that identified a variety of natural resource areas and conditions; AND/OR Collected samples and recorded data such as numbers, measurements, weights, samples, and special notes, and made determinations, such as species identification, habitat condition, injury, disease. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. TIME IN GRADE REQUIREMENT: If you are a current federal employee in the General Schedule (GS) pay plan and applying for a promotion opportunity, you must meet time-in-grade (TIG) requirements of 52 weeks of service at the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression for the position being filled. This requirement must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
