This position is located on the Kellogg Soil Survey Laboratory (KSSL), National Soil Survey Center (NSSC), Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), in Lincoln, Nebraska. The incumbent for this position will primarily perform and facilitate laboratory analysis of soil samples. The incumbent will participate in outreach activities, provide customer service, and make presentations about lab results.

Duties

Perform and facilitate laboratory analysis of soil samples. Test and maintain or update information management systems to ensure optimal operational capacity. Participate in outreach activities according to management priorities and directives. Oversee adaptation of procedures when new or unexpected observations are encountered. Provide recommendations to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and quality of analytical procedures.

Requirements

  • Physical Demands: Long periods of standing; Recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activity; Recurring lifting of moderately heavy items weighing under 50 pounds.
  • Work Environment: Laboratory involving moderate risks or discomforts from regular and recurring exposure to irritant chemicals that requires special safety precautions, protective clothing, and other gear as the situation warrants.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level(s) in which you are applying: GS-07 Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-07 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service that included: Assisting with sample extractions and preparation techniques for soil samples; Participating in outreach activities to support management priorities; and Providing customer service by providing lab data to meet mission requirements. OR Education: One full year of graduate education in physical science, soil science, chemistry, or other directly related field. (Must submit transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above that total 100% when combined. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Must submit transcripts.) GS-08 Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-08 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service that included: Conducting sample extractions and preparation techniques for soil samples; Setting up of soil analysis projects using a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) or similar system to track work; Performing proper sample transport, handling, and disposal of domestic and foreign soils in compliance with regulations; and Providing customer service by providing lab data and interpreting lab data to meet mission requirements. OR Education: Must have successfully completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of graduate education in physical science, soil science, chemistry, or other directly related field. (Must submit transcripts.) OR Combination: A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above that total 100% when combined. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. (Must submit transcripts.) GS-09 Specialized Experience: To qualify for the GS-09 level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 grade level in the Federal service that included: Using Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and similar system to document handling soil samples; Utilizing laboratory instruments (e.g.: infrared spectrometers, x-ray diffractometers, or soil moisture equipment) to conduct sample analysis; Disposing of hazardous materials in compliance with Federal regulations; and Giving presentations about lab results or operations to management. OR Education: Must have successfully completed a Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of graduate education in physical science, soil science, chemistry, or other directly related field. (Must submit transcripts.) OR Combination: A combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above that total 100% when combined. Determine the total qualifying experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; then determine the education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then add the two percentages.
