This position serves as the motor vehicle operator for the Hero's Transportation Program. The Hero's Transportation Program encompass various transportation sections, Grounds, Fleet Management, Veteran Transportation Services (VTS), Valet Parking and Transportation of Reusable Medical Equipment (SPS). In addition, the incumbent transports reusable medical equipment which requires specialized training in safely transporting contaminated instruments avoiding cross-contamination and infection.
Duties
Major Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
The incumbent operates automobiles, station wagons, vans, pickup trucks, parking lot sweepers, buses, cargo vans and trucks to include vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 1200 pounds up to as much as 25,500 pounds. Also, included are special purpose vehicles equipped with a PTO {power take off).
Inspects over 200 GSA Fleet vehicles stationed at various locations daily (i.e. Atlanta V AMC, East Point Homeless Program, Lawrenceville Clinic, VISN, Decatur Clinic, and Oakwood Clinic etc.), ensuring that the vehicles are taken to have regular oil changes, car washes, and any other repairs needed for the vehicle (i.e. flat tires, accident repairs etc.).
Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with federal and state legal regulations and Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) requirements. Issues reports involving problems encountered on the route, including reckless driver reports, equipment failure reports and any dangerous conditions that could jeopardize the safety of the passenger or other members of the public.
Handles routine and special pickups from the lab, court documents, and accident reports for government vehicles, pickup staff from the airport and mail pickup from various CBOCs etc. Transports staff to various training locations and pick up vehicles from various locations (i.e. in and out of the state Georgia).
Transports reusable medical equipment which requires specialized training in safely transporting contaminated instruments avoiding cross-contamination and infection. Incumbent retrieves surgical instruments from various CBOCs, lifts containers that may exceed 50 pounds with/without the assistance of a hand truck or other devices.
Follows orders of his/her supervisor indicating the type of vehicle to be operated, destination, purpose of the trip, and work to be done. Maintains a close line of communication with the Grounds and Transportation secretary, dispatcher and coordinates his/her runs with the secretary keeping them informed of their whereabouts and checks in and off station frequently.
Meets the needs of customers while supporting the Atlanta VA mission. He/she communicates and treats customers (veterans, their representatives, visitors and staff) in a courteous, professional and respectful manner. He/she communicates changes in policy and procedure, and provides feedback from customers to Engineering Maintenance and Operations Supervisor Foreman. He/she demonstrates the ability to work effectively with others, and provides the customer(s) with consistent information according to established policies and procedures.
Handles conflict and problems in dealing with the customer constructively, sensitively and appropriately. Demonstrates caring and cultural sensitivity; being courteous to patients, their families and staff, by offering support and encouragement; being punctual and attentive to procedure schedules; assists in loading, securing, and unloading wheelchairs and passengers based on the requirements of the Americans With Disabilities Act of 1990.
Work Schedule: Monday -Friday; 7:30 am - 4:00pm, An occasional Saturday and Sunday for outings and unit road trips for special events. Hours may change based on the need of the agency.
Location: This position will be stationed at the Trinka Davis Veterans Village Community Living Center (TDVV CLC) in Carrollton, GA.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. Moderate physical effort may be required in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs, such as installing an emergency fan belt or replacing an electrical fuse on open highways.
Drivers transporting patients must be able to assist patients in and out of vehicles. This involves considerable physical exertion frequent stooping, bending, and lifting of patients. Driver must also be able to load and assist wheelchair patients, often with no assistance.Drivers assigned to transport reusable medical equipment must be able to lift containers. This involves considerable physical exertion, frequent stooping, bending, lifting, and walking.Drivers are assigned to park or retrieve patient/visitor vehicles and must be able to assist patients or visitors by parking his/her vehicle upon arrival to the Medical Center. This involves considerable physical exertion, frequent running, walking, and standing, stooping, or bending for the majority of his/her normal tour.
