Duties
Assists specialists with research and interpretation of laws regarding pesticides, herbicides, hazardous waste, hazardous materials, air and water quality.
Reviews environmental files, records, and findings, and summarizes relevant factual information in connection with compliance reviews on behalf of the specialist.
Compiles and analyzes environmental data and prepares environmental documentation, reports, plans, and correspondence for environmental programs.
Ensures that hazardous waste generated on site is handled in compliance with the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Transportation (DOT), California, and local regulations.
Prepares hazardous waste that is generated from damaged or spilled hazardous materials (i.e. oils, paints) for shipment, and disposal, as necessary, to ensure environmental compliance.
Inspects hazardous waste accumulation areas weekly for proper segregation and containment.

- Must be able to obtain and maintain required hazardous materials handling certifications.
Qualifications
To qualify for an Environmental Protection Assistant your resume and supporting documentation must support:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular competencies to successfully perform the duties of the position, and is directly in or related to this position. To qualify at the GS-07 level, applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 level or equivalent under other pay systems in the Federal service, military, or private sector. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements including time-in-grade (General Schedule (GS) positions only), time-after-competitive appointment, minimum qualifications, and any other regulatory requirements by the cut-off/closing date of the announcement. Creditable specialized experience includes:
Collecting, handling, transporting, packaging, and storing hazardous materials and wastes.
Identifying and labeling hazardous substances
Using environmental laws and terminology to prepare environmental surveys, plans, and procedures.
Researching government contracting procedures and contracting requirements.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Works in a facility that is usually well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Also works outside and may be exposed to various weather conditions while performing assignments. Employee may be exposed to chemical vapors, skin irritants, caustic and poisonous items from hazardous material or hazardous wastes. Specific safety procedures must be followed and protective clothing and other protective gear (shoes, PPE, respirators, may be required). Employee lifts, moves, carries, and loads items and equipment weighing up to 40 pounds.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
