Employee will serve as a Motor Vehicle Operator within the Textile Care Section of Environmental Management Service located at the New Mexico Veterans Healthcare System in Albuquerque, NM. Employee will serve as Over the Road (OTR) driver to pick-up and drop-off linens in Amarillo, TX.

Duties

Duties will include, but may not be limited to the following: Delivers clean and pick up soiled linen to various locations, operating diesel, gas, or alternative fuel powered 25,999 gross vehicle weight vehicles with a hydraulic lift gate. Operates vehicles safely which consists of interstate driving, two-lane roads, maneuver vehicle in and around congested loading dock areas, and during nighttime. Loads and unloads linen carts, determines weight distribution and safety devices for delivery. Performs basic pre- and post-trip vehicle maintenance checks, includes: checks lubrication and cooling system for leaks, loose hoses, battery condition, windshield wiper condition, general vehicle integrity, tire condition, and keeps the vehicle clean at all times. Applies general mechanical skills to identify problems during vehicle operation. Possesses knowledge to ensure Infection Control measures are maintained between soiled linen and clean textiles, of which soiled linen and clean textiles are never transported at the same time. Uses proper aseptic techniques, including proper hand hygiene. Reads and understands road maps and applies knowledge of local, state, and federal motor vehicle regulations and national traffic laws. Willing to be cross trained in techniques/procedures in the event of staffing shortages or unforeseen workload. This may include duties as a Linen Clerk, Laundry Worker, Machine Operator, and Washman, including operating washer/extractors, dryers, ironers, etc. Responsible to interact with customers, patients, visitors, and staff in a cooperative and professional manner. Performs other duties assigned as necessary. Work Schedule: Monday and Thursday (2 days/week), 1:00am - 11:30am. This position is assigned to work holidays and irregular tours and on occasion, may be asked to work extended hours for coverage as needed. NOTE: This is a part-time position (20 hours/week. Benefits and time-off accrual will be prorated and based on your part-time work schedule. DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS: Requires the ability to climb into and out of vehicles. Position routinely requires individual to operate vehicles, electrical equipment, and exert physical effort to load, unload, and transport by pushing/pulling clean and soiled linen carts in a controlled manner weighing up to 700 pounds. Carts are equipped with wheels/tires for easy movement Exposed to repetitive motion of arms, wrist, and hands and to perform simple grasping and find hand manipulation, reaching outward and above the shoulder, lift soiled linen bags up and onto linen cares and frequent stooping, bending, twisting, kneeling, standing, walking, and sitting. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds and able to wear personal protective equipment for extended periods of time. Employee will work a compressed tour of duty, 10 hours per day. Work is performed both inside and outside in all weather conditions. Must be constantly aware of fluctuating weather conditions, e.g., periods of extreme summer heat, rain/slick road conditions, and snow/icy roads and dock facilities. Work is normally performed inside the cab of an air-conditioned or heated vehicle. Will be exposed intermittently to excess humidity, chemicals, solvents, fumes, dust, and noise. Exposed to possible contagions from handling contaminated linens, with the potential for sharps exposure in soiled linen. Subject to cuts, scrapes, bumps, bruises, slips, falls, and other injuries, and to disagreeable odors in the performance of duties. Experience required for this position includes operating/driving diesel, gas, or alternative fuel powered vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 26,000 and a hydraulic lift gate; performing pre- and post-trip vehicle maintenance checks; loading and unloading cargo; and reading/understanding road maps and road/traffic laws and driving interstate highways, two-lane roads, maneuvering vehicle in and around congested loading dock areas, and in dark/nighttime conditions.
