About the Position: Incumbent performs a variety of tasks incidental to maintaining the ranges, training and administrative areas.
Duties
Work involves constructing, installing, repairing or modifying items such as frame structures, decking, partitions, shelving, etc.
Uses common woodworking tools, i.e. tape measures, rulers, squares, planes, screwdrivers, power saws, and power planers.
Drives truck with gross combined vehicle weight up to 52,000 pounds.
Work is performed in accordance with established methods and procedures, inclusive of those pertinent to attachments and any special instructions provided by team leader.
Performs support and maintenance work for the computerized automated ranges and maneuver live fire ranges.
Work involves performing a variety of minor electrical repair and maintenance work to project buildings and facilities.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must have normal depth perception and color vision and will be required to lift up to 50 pounds unassisted (Pre-employment physical exam is required).
- This is a drug testing designated position (TDP) under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
- Incumbent may be required to work rotating shifts and/or irregular tour of duty and may be subject to overtime depending upon mission needs.
- This position has been designated "arduous duty", requiring protracted periods of considerable exertion.
- Outdoor work may involve extreme Arctic conditions (e.g., wind, snow, whiteout, extreme cold, etc.).
- Duties may be performed at various range locations within the state of Alaska.
- Must either possess or be able to obtain and maintain Alaska Driver's License.
- If required to obtain the CDL, incumbent must obtain and maintain a CDL within 90 days of employment.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Range Maintenance Worker (Motor Vehicle Operator) without more than normal supervision. I am able to perform common Range Maintenance Worker (MVO) tasks to include repairing structures such as partitions, walls, doors, fences, window frames, office furniture, roofs, and shelves; perform minor electrical repair work for switches, outlets, plugs, cables, appliances, and lighting systems; apply and prepare surfaces for paint, enamel, lacquer, varnish, or stain; and maintain grounds in clean, safe, and orderly manner by operating a tractor with attachments to mow, trim, or weed lawns. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Works on ladders and in trenches, and where parts of the systems worked on are in hard-to-reach places. Stands, stoops, bends, kneels, climbs, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up tools, equipment and parts that weigh up to 80 pounds. Is assisted when carrying heavier equipment for long distances. Work requires climbing up and down a steep flight of stairs to reach the 50-foot control tower to perform maintenance. Incumbent is exposed to the extremes of weather and must be able to walk along with the training units on rough terrain (1-2 miles) on various live fire ranges repetitively.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Works primarily outside, in dirt, dust, mud, windy and cold/hot weather. Is required to wear and/or use protective clothing and equipment in accordance with established health and safety regulations and SOP's. Exposed to dangers of live fire ranges, pyrotechnics, laser frequencies and explosives. May be exposed to chemicals when handling batteries used in operating remote controlled target devices. Is exposed to the possibility of abrasions, cuts, burns, and electrical shock. Simulators contain explosive charges equivalent to a 1/4 pound charge of TNT. Gun Fire simulator requires charging compressed gasses (oxygen) and flammable gasses (propane). Work may require use of elevated platforms in excess of fifty feet, boom trucks and man lifts.
