Salary: $31 - 36 per hour

You will serve as a Machinist at the Norfolk Naval ship Detachment, Navy Foundry and Propellar Center of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will set up and efficiently machines naval ship propellers, dies and related parts utilizing a five axes CNC universal milling machine as the primary machine tool. You will work from blueprints and specifications of finished piece and use shop math to make calculations as necessary in planning. You will perform bench and floor assembly of machined parts to make precision working and frequently complex assemblies. You will operate various machines controlling speed and feed, bringing various tools to bear in successive operations.

Requirements

  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. Ability to set up and operate a wide range of machines and machine tools such as vertical and horizontal mills. Ability to check work with assorted standard gages, calipers, micrometers and other precision measuring devices. Ability to work from technical work documents in the form of PCI's, drawings and blueprints. Ability to use shop mathematics, operations and procedures that allow the machinist to determine the best machines and tools to use for each assignment, and the optimal method to align the equipment to machine the stock to prescribed tolerances.
