Duties
As a Maintenance Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:
Qualifications
Qualification requirements in the vacancy announcements are based on the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook, which contains federal qualification standards. CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
This position requires the operation of a Federal motor vehicle. Incumbent must possess a valid driver's license to drive a federal motor vehicle on a regular and recurring basis.
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Forklift Operators certification, NOAA small boat operators' qualifications.
Must be able to obtain and maintain CPR Certification, AED Certification and a First Aid Certification within 90 days of hire.
Position may be required to perform travel, which may be for periods up to several weeks at a time.
Work may be performed in remote locations.
Incumbent will be part of a rotating on call pool of personnel responding to emergencies after hours and on weekends.
Will be responsible for snow removal prior to normal hours of operation in the winter months.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work is performed inside and outside with exposure to all kinds of weather. The work area maybe dirty, wet, dusty, and greasy, with inadequate lighting, heat, or ventilation. Incumbent is subject to cuts, abrasions, burns, broken bones, electrical shock, infections, bites, exposure to inhalation or harmful chemical fumes, irritation of eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and the hazards of operating power tools and equipment. Discomfort is encountered when wearing protective clothing, gloves, or eye goggles.
The incumbent will be required to travel periodically to our facility at the Little Port Walter Research Facility (LPW). They will need to be flexible enough to respond to facility needs at any location at any time. Logistics management and the ability to operate independently at a remote site for the support of the staff and programmatic needs are also a significant component of this position.
JOB ELEMENT:
Federal Wage System (FWS) positions require the use of a Screen-Out Element (SOE). Points awarded for this element will range from 0 to 4, with 4 being the highest. Points will be based on experience and training which are documented by your responses to the questionnaire. All applicants must receive a score of 2.0 or above on the SOE and an average of 2.0 on all the job elements in order to be considered minimally qualified for the position(s) to be filled.

Performing most difficult tasks independently as an expert or have been consulted by other employees in difficult situations performing duties including: I have experience involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, and related structures, fixtures, and utilities utilizing the following trades and the tools and equipment associated with trade: Electrical, Air Conditioning, Heating Equipment, Welding, Machinist, Plumbing, Pipefitting, Carpentry, and Painter; Utilizing shop mathematics to plan, compute, and layout maintenance projects; and, Interpreting and applying building plans and blueprints.
B. Performing full range of tasks on own initiative including: I have experience involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, or related structures, fixtures, or utilities utilizing at least TWO of following trades and the tools and equipment associated with trade: Electrical, Air Conditioning, Heating Equipment, Welding, Machinist, Plumbing, Pipefitting, Carpentry, and Painter; and, Assisting with calculations for maintenance projects.
C. Performing common tasks under general supervision including: I have experience involving the upkeep of buildings, grounds, or related structures, fixtures, or utilities using common handy tasks and tools such as changing lightbulbs, unclogging drains or fixing minor leaks, maintaining HVAC filters, groundskeeper duties, or minor carpentry or paint repairs.
