About the Position: Serves as the Supervisory member of the Sterile Processing team in the Department of Operative and Anesthesia Services (DOAS) by overall management and control of paraprofessional staff as well as by providing support for sterile processing operations. Responsible for Quality Assurance.
Duties
Monitor and track surgical instruments using automated instrument tracking systems.
Monitor inventory records using a variety of software.
Disassemble, decontaminate, and sterilize surgical instruments.
Inspect instruments and equipment to ensure operational efficiency and surgical precision.
Supervise the Sterile Processing team, which supports the decontamination, sterilization, instrument and cart preparation, equipment maintenance and supply, and storage and issue of medical supplies.
Evaluate work performance and develops performance standards.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation. This position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
- This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
- Immunization screening may be required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- This position has mandatory seasonal Influenza vaccination requirements and is subject to annual seasonal Influenza vaccinations unless otherwise exempted for medical or religious reasons (documentation of exemption must be provided upon hire).
- This position may require the incumbent to have Tuberculosis testing.
- All applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to submit a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
- This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random drug testing, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position requires that you obtain and maintain a Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from, or in accordance with, the American Heart Association and American Red Cross. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.
- Position may be designated as Inclement Weather Essential. The incumbent must make every attempt to report for work on time and/or remain on duty during severe weather conditions.
- This position has been designated Mission Essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations, the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Employee shifts are rotated on a regularly scheduled basis.
- The incumbent may be required to work on any day or shift, including PMs, nights, weekends, holidays, off-shift duty hours or an βon callβ basis, necessary to meet mission requirements.
- This position may require the incumbent to complete a one-year supervisory probationary period.
- One year trial/probationary period may be required.
- Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds may be required.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of up to 5% of the time.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) preparing medical items and equipment to be utilized for medical care; 2) inspecting and sterilizing surgical instruments; 3) processing, ordering, and storing medical supplies.; and/or 4) utilizing automated tracking/personal computer systems. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Medical Laboratory Technician, Microbiology, Biomedical Sciences, Chemistry and Biology (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
