There are two (2) TERM GS-09 Archivist positions:
One Term Archivist position is at Zion National Park and one is at Yellowstone National Park.
These positions will have an initial appointment expecting to last 13 months but may be extended up to a total of four years. Term positions do not convey permanent status in the Federal service.
Duties
These Term Archivist positions are time-limited appointments to assist with specific project work to help preserve, and make accessible, designated collections of archival materials. Major duties include:
Survey and appraise Park administrative and resource management records.
Process (arrange, rehouse, and describe) record collections following professional standards and agency guidelines.
Produce user-friendly, detailed finding aids to make the informational content of the records accessible to researchers.
Catalog archival collections in electronic databases.
Write sections of park access and use policies, and proivdes reference services.
Physical Demands: The work requires frequent retrieval of records and books from storage areas with some bending and lifting of cartons of papers (weighing up to 50 pounds). Operation of standard office equipment is required and some operation of motor vehicles. Work requires travel to various locations for the purpose of acquisitions and collection of materials to other NPS and non-NPS sites with archival and manuscript collections, and to training and professional meetings. Documentary research and report writing work is sedentary, which entails the ability to concentrate and write for long periods of time.
Working Conditions: Most of the work is performed in the archives (and library) of park or central office. However, the position also requires performing work in the offices of other research bureaus, museums, national parks, public program offices, administrative offices, and other libraries and archives.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate (1) the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, (2) starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and (3) the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time). In order to qualify for this GS-1420-09 Archivist position you must meet the qualifications below:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education as described below. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
At least one full year (52 weeks) of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). You must include hours per week worked (full time is 40 hours per week) and dates in to/from and month/year format in order to accurately calculate your length of specialized experience.
Evaluation of Specialized Experience: Professional experience must have been in archival science, or in a directly related field of work such as history that involved the collection, appraisal, analysis, or synthesis of information having historical or archival values. The following are illustrative of kinds of experience that may be accepted as meeting the professional experience requirements: (1) experience as an archivist in Federal, state, religious institution, business, or other archives, or in manuscript depositories, and (2) experience of an archival nature that involved research in archival science, or in a directly related field such as history, government, economics, political science, international relations, or international law.
This specialized experience includes activities such as:
Conducted hands-on work in archives under the guidance of a credentialed archivist to organize;
Arranged and described a major body of analog (paper) records;
Cataloged archival collections;
Appraised records for retention based on a records schedule;
Prepared finding aids for an archival collection; and/or
Assessed the condition of records and rehouse them to ensure their preservation.

EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least two years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or a master's or equivalent in archival science, history, or a closely related degree field. You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible.

COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. For example, six months of specialized experience and two and a half years of graduate level education leading to a master's degree. (note: only graduate education in excess of the amount required for the next lower grade level can be combined with the appropriate level of experience to qualify). You must include a copy of your official or unofficial transcripts with your application. If you do not include a copy of your transcripts, you will be found ineligible.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.

education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
