This position is located in Joshua Tree National Park, in the Science & Resource Stewardship Division. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work from approximately August through July, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year.

Duties

Manages native plant nursery operations; which includes growing native plants from seed, collecting native plant seed, cleaning and storing seed properly, maintaining nursery facilities, maintaining and installing irrigation. Coordinates with other agencies and land owners to propagate and deliver plants. Procures supplies and equipment needed for operations. Manages and maintains databases for vegetation resources, including propagation records and seed inventory. Provides guidance and oversight to student interns and partner staff regarding nursery operations. Attends local, regional, and national meetings and provides information related to nursery management, seed collection and storage, and outplanting programs at the park. Provides information about these resources at educational and public outreach events.

Qualifications

All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-12/09/2024-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. EXPERIENCE: At least one year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. This experience includes activities such as: 1) conducting native plant nursery operations, or seed collection and processing, 2) collecting monitoring data on assorted physical restoration, revegetation, or vegetation management projects using specified sampling techniques and procedures; 3) monitoring rare, invasive, or seed source plants and updating maps and files; and 4) leading field crews in invasive plant control, revegetation, or restoration projects. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 1 year of graduate education (18 semester hours) directly related to the position such as biology, botany, ecology, horticulture, natural resource management or related disciplines appropriate to the position. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of graduate education and specialized experience as described above that total 1 year. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
