About the Position: This position is located at the Regional Health Command, Public Health Activity, Fort Irwin Vet Branch, Fort Irwin, California. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as an Animal Health Technician completing examinations, evaluations, and vaccinations of patients, and providing radiology and surgical support for Military Working Dogs, Government Owned Animals (GOAs) and Privately Owned Animals (POA).
Duties
Conduct preliminary observation and cursory physical examinations.
Serve as adjunct trainer/instructor for FYGVE program and may provide sustainment training for VETCEN animal care technician staff.
Coordinate Veterinary Clinic operations and appointments.
Perform routine dental radiology on patients.
Monitor patient recovery and rehabilitation following surgery or illness providing appropriate therapies.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- This position is designated as moderate risk involving Public Trust. Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation including a credit check to determine suitability for Federal employment and/or the position.
- Overtime may be required after the normal duty day, on weekends, or holidays.
- This position requires the ability to lift animals and objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance and up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- This position may require occasional TDY up to 10% of the time.
- This position requires a pre-employment physical examination.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R.
- This position may require working on call duties and evenings.
- This position may require employees to wear a uniform and or/protective clothing.
- This position is subject to screening and update of required immunizations.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience assisting with routine examinations, specimen collection, and vaccinations on a variety of animals such as: military working dogs, horses, household pets, etc. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
