The position is located in Richmond VA Medical Center in the Nutrition and Food Service (NFS). The duties of this position include driving a box truck/cargo van to various buildings around the campus of the making daily deliveries, 3-4 times per day, issuing food supplies, nutritional supplements and non-food supplies to support food service operations to Veterans residing in specialized programs throughout the campus.

Duties

Major duties and responsibilities include: Operates vehicles such as shuttle carts/golf carts, vans, pickup trucks, panel trucks, flatbed trucks, carryalls, sedans, crew cab pickup trucks, and sports utility vehicles which typically have an approximate gross vehicle weight of up to 4500 kilograms (10,000 pounds). Handles cargo loading and unloading from vehicles to provide timely delivery of supplies and equipment directly to users or to storage areas and completes documentation to record activities. Secures cargo to prevent damage to contents during transport and ensures that the vehicle is not loaded beyond the maximum capacity. Loads and unloads by hand but may use a handcart to transport items. Protects materials, supplies and equipment from the elements. Vehicle transport includes medical and office supplies, equipment, and mail over Federal, State and Country roads in all traffic conditions, on specific trip assignments or regularly established schedules. Performs routine safety and maintenance checks on the vehicle to include, but not limited to, the addition of fuels or lubricants and the checking of tire pressure. Maintains cleanliness and professional appearance of both the in and outside of the vehicle. Completes all maintenance service records to document activities. Provides courtesy rides to staff, Veterans, and visitors as needed to and from parking lots or garages and/or to and from buildings on the facility campus. Assists in areas like the warehouse to receive, store, and move materials and equipment. Performs other related duties as assigned. Requirements

  • At Grade 5, drivers operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads (or the equivalent), and are exposed to the danger of serious accidents.

Qualifications

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C (www.opm.gov/qualifications/x-118c). For this position, the job element method is used to match what you, the applicant, can do against what the work calls for. Your knowledge, skills and abilities will be compared to the knowledge, skills and abilities (called job elements) needed for success. Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element. The potential eligible are rated against the remainder of the job elements. Driver's License Requirement: Must possess a valid state issued driver's license to operate a motor vehicle.(Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid driver's license at the time of your interview.) You will be rated on the following Job Elements as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Without More than Normal Supervision (Screen-Out): Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. Motor Vehicles: Operation of Motor Vehicles. Mobile Equipment Operation: Ability to interpret instructions, specifications, etc. related to mobile equipment operations. Motor Vehicles: Ability to drive safely. Reliability and Dependability: As a Motor Vehicle Operator. Work Practices: Keeping things neat, clean, and in order. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: While operating motor vehicles, the position exerts light physical effort in reaching, bending, turning or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to operate hand and foot controls. May need to exert effort to make emergency repairs, such as changing a flat tire. Frequently, bends, lifts and carries equipment, supplies or materials up to 40 pounds. Work is executed mostly outside operating vehicles in all kinds of traffic and weather on public roads and on the facility campus. The position is exposed to the possibility of traffic hazards. The position is exposed to dirt, fumes, grease and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, falls and broken bones when loading and unloading the vehicle. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
