Duties

As a Supervisory Research Health Scientist you will: Serve as a first-line research supervisor responsible for providing scientific leadership during the planning, directing and execution of the activities and services of a team within a Branch involved in studying and analyzing the patterns, causes and effects of health and disease conditions, which result in the development of methods to advance the understanding of the effects of public health issues and problems on occupational safety and health. Serve as the recognized expert in a health scientific field for the agency with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, appraising programs, and initiating requirements for health scientific occupational safety and health studies. Initiate and maintain contacts with epidemiologists, health scientists, engineers, physicians, statisticians and other research personnel in government agencies, academic institutions, and industry, who are involved in common areas of research. Author or coauthor manuscripts or technical reports reflecting the results of the research and arranges for publication of such documents after approval by appropriate reviewing officials.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (https://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/) at the time the degree was obtained. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience designing, conducting, and analyzing studies to investigate patterns, causes, and effects of health and injury-related conditions in populations. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
