This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: This position is located with the US Army Forces Command, Holistic Health and Fitness Performance Team, Fort Irwin, California.
Duties
Serve as the Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist for an Army brigade sized unit.
Deliver individual, group, and unit nutrition services and education to optimize Solder performance, overall unit readiness, and mission success.
Work with an interdisciplinary team to communicate and coordinate programming appropriate to the needs of health and injured Soldiers.
Conduct assessments to identify nutrition-related concerns of individuals and units.
Develop comprehensive performance nutrition programs that improve foundational health and optimize environmental and task-specific performance.
Execute and evaluate programs, services, education, and resources for performance enhancement.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain, within six months, and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required. Moderate to heavy lifting up to 50 pounds is required.
- Applicants must be able to fulfill credentialing requirements and obtain and maintain appropriate/relevant clinical privileges.
- This position may require temporary duty (TDY) business travel up to 25% of the time.
- The incumbent may be required to work overtime and/or other than normal duty hours for data collection, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- The work requires physical exertion that includes lifting of moderately heavy items, to include treatment tables, exercise equipment, research data collection equipment, and military equipment used by Soldiers.
- The work also requires exertion to perform exercises used in physical performance and rehabilitation, including all events in the Army Combat Fitness Test.
- This position is subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.

Basic Requirement for Dietitian (Holistic Health and Fitness):
Degree: Bachelor's or graduate (or higher level) degree in the field of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA) prior to January 1, 2012) in effect at the time of graduation. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
OR
Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly American Dietetic Association (ADA)) for dietitians or nutritionists.
OR
Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).
Exemption: You are exempt from the basic requirements above if you are a current federal employee occupying a position in the 0630 occupational series and have been continuously employed in this occupational series since September 27, 2017 or before. Note: You will be required to provide appropriate documentation to the respective Human Resources Office to validate your status.
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assessing nutrition related concerns of individuals or groups, providing nutritional counseling or interventions, educating on performance nutrition, and developing and monitoring an organization's nutrition program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11).
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
