This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain competitive positions to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: Serves as a Welder, responsible for the fabrication, modification, repair, assembly, & installation of various types of metal and alloy parts, equipment, systems, & structures such as dredges, towboats, barges, tractors, cranes, derrick boats, drag lines, quarter boats, bouys, buildings,etc

Duties

Performs the required planning, layout and fitting work involved in the construction, maintenance and repair of equipment and structures. Perform sheet metal work involving 30 to 16 gauged metals, such as galvanized iron, stainless steel, tin, copper, lead, zinc, and aluminum. Determining the welding techniques to use and select the proper materials such as the right size and type of welding electrodes or rods. Constructing elbows of any degree and size up to 48 inches in diameter; flumes; conduits; multi-sided shapes and irregular configuration. Assuring material is ordered and delivered to work sites so work is not delayed. Performing pressure work related to steam lines and boilers which are subject to Coast Guard inspection and approval. Utilizing templates, heavy shop machines and equipment, sledge hammers, chisels, bars, wrenches, expanders, bolt cutters, drills, cutting torches, etc.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position requires pre-employment and annual physical.
  • Work in inclement weather.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50lbs.

Qualifications

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welder without more than normal supervision. Duties include: Constructing a wide range of welds from simple to moderate welding; determining disassemble or repair necessary and materials to be used; Working with light, heavy gauge and hardened metals, welding all the various types of weldable items assigned, using flat, vertical, horizontal, at overhead positions. utilizing templates, jigs, blueprints and other guides to repair, modify or fabricate metal items for all types of equipment, including repair of light or intricately made mechanical parts. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Physical Effort: Work involves standing, walking, stooping, climbing and crawling. Work may be performed in an awkward or cramped position. Incumbent frequently handles, lifts, or carries parts or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally may lift and carry items weighing more. Working Conditions: Work is performed both inside and outside. Incumbent is subject to injury from lifting and operating machines; burns from electric arc, gas torches, and molten metal; and danger exists to the eyes from metal chips, electric arc, rust and dust. There is also the danger of explosive gases.
