Duties
Prepare ground meats for meat loaf, meatballs, hamburgers and croquettes.
Set up and serve food on cafeteria lines.
Pack foods for field feedings and take food samples.
Broil and steam foods.
Make gelatin salads and aspic salads, custard as well as fruit sauces and batters.
Make fruit salads, vegetable salads, Jell-O and puddings.
Grill foods and deep fat fries by conventional method and mechanical systems.
Roast a variety of meats such as, but not limited to, beef, pork, veal, lamb, and poultry.
Prepare and cook any or all food items in bulk quantities or individual servings for regular or modified diets required for morning, noon or evening servings, late or early meals, and/or special feedings (diet meals, training meals).
Prepare vegetables and make a variety of salads and salad dressings.
Prepare a variety of soups, stews, casseroles, gravies, sauces, hot cereals and syrups.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed Tier 1 background investigation.
- This position requires passing a pre-employment physical examination and periodic physical examinations.
- This position requires the incumbent to work shift schedules that include early mornings, late nights, week-ends, and holidays.
- This is a weather essential position, and the incumbent must report to work and/or remain in their position in bad weather, natural disasters, or other crisis.
- This position requires the incumbent to be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear safety gear.
- This position requires the incumbent to wear a uniform.
- Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary, the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Cook without more than normal supervision performing common cooking duties to include: (1) Preparing and cooking meats, poultry, seafood, vegetables, fruits, sauces, and/or gravies for meals; (2) Preparing menu items using special or difficult recipes that require numerous interrelated steps, many ingredients, and/or lengthy preparation time; and (3) Operating and/or cleaning of food service equipment such as trunnion kettle, chopper, vegetable peeler, and vertical cutter-mixer. Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
To meet the basic eligibility, you must receive at least two points on the screen-out element indicated above and must have an average of two points on all the job elements listed below. Your application will be further evaluated to determine if you meet the best qualified cut-off for referral to the selecting official.

PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Work involves frequent lifting, pulling and pushing, and constant standing and walking. Must be able to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds unassisted, and lift and carry items weighing over 50 pounds with assistance of other workers or lifting devices.
WORKING CONDITIONS: Employee is exposed to extreme heat and extreme cold temperatures, must stand on tile floor, subject to burns, cuts and other injuries from hand tools or power equipment.Required to work at any Cadet Mess facility including, but not limited to Cadet Mess, West Point and Cadet Mess, Camp Buckner.
