This position is located at John Muir National Historic Site, in Martinez, CA and is within the Division of Resource Managment and Planning. Career-Seasonal appointments are permanent positions and include the same benefits as Career appointments, but do not provide work on a year-round basis. You will work approximately 25 pay periods annually, and you will be in a non-pay status for the remainder of the year from approximately October 5th to October 18th.

Duties

As a GS-05 Museum Technician, you will perform duties such as: Unpack and process objects; perform limited cleaning and identify preservation needs. Identify and label objects by matching documentation field labels, notes, etc. with the objects. Catalog and enter data into the designated catalog program. Prepare, maintain, and organize manual and automated curatorial records. Perform routine research for catalog records and exhibits. Perform routine cleaning of objects as directed. As a GS-07 Museum Technician, you will further perform duties such as: Handle, clean, store, and label objects in the permanent collection. Oversee housekeeping work of other museum or maintenance staff. Process incoming and outgoing loans in accordance with NPS standards. Maintain and update museum records, including accession, catalog, and loan records. Assist on curatorial projects such as cataloging backlogs; organization of photograph and archival collections; and production of finding aids. Duties will be developmental in nature when filled below the full performance level. John Muir National Historic Site is located in Martinez, CA, along the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers 35 miles northeast of San Francisco. Established in 1876, Martinez is the County seat of Contra Costa County and has a population of just under 36,000. Martinez is accessible to San Francisco and other nearby cities via Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) commuter train services as well as additional destinations via Amtrak rail lines. * Additional Condition of Employment You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to1 night per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. Applicants must be at least (1)18 years old or (2) at least 16 years old and: (a) Have graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or (b) Have completed a formal vocational training program; or (c) Have received a statement from school authorities agreeing with their preference for employment rather than continuing their education; or (d) Be currently enrolled in a secondary school and either work only during school vacation periods or work part-time during the school year under a formal student employment program. Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: unpacking, processing and repacking museum objects; preparing objects for storage or display; cataloging objects into museum database; maintaining curatorial records; performing routine cleaning of museum objects per established standards and assisting with installation of exhibits. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree with major study or 24 semester hours of course work in a related field, such as art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. You must include transcripts. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. To qualify for this position at the GS-07 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Specialized experience includes but is not limited to: unpacking, processing and repacking museum objects; identifying, labeling and preparing objects for storage or display; cataloging objects into museum database; preparing, maintaining and organizing curatorial records; performing routine cleaning of museum objects per established standards; monitoring environmental conditions; assisting with installation, repair and rehabilitation and development of exhibits; photographing museum collections and scanning images; performing pest management monitoring and mitigation; researching copyright and related legal issues as pertaining to exhibition and publication of museum material. You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successful completion of at least 1 full academic year of related graduate level education or superior academic achievement. Related fields of study include art, history, museum studies, scientific subjects, or other courses related to the position to be filled. S.A.A. is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average, or (3) honor society membership. -OR- Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above. The total must equal at least 100 percent to qualify. You must include transcripts. Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
