About the Position: Serve as subject matter expert for molecular biology within the Public Health Command, East Laboratory Sciences Division responsible for coordinating state-of-the-art molecular techniques to isolate and identify various animal and human pathogens. FT. GEORGE G. MEADE, MD

Duties

Collaborate with scientists at other government agencies, universities, and private industry on new developments in the study of nucleic acid extraction and molecular detection techniques. Coordinate all collaborative studies to determine suitability of methods, accuracy, precision, and percentage recovery of analytes. Oversee implementation of new instrumentation or techniques and modification/optimization of current procedures. Search scientific literature for latest research in the field of molecular detection techniques. Develop and implements effective training and communications on new or revised quality procedures. Participate in problem identification, root cause analysis, developing appropriate corrective actions, and verification of corrective actions. Prepare procurement packages for supply and service contracts and capital equipment acquisitions. Provide recommendations on technology replacement, equipment upgrade, and life-cycle management.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship is required. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship.
  • Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% or less of the time.
  • Must be available to work on weekends and after-duty hours in order to handle emergency cases.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • One-year trial/probationary period may be required.
  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) developing analytical assays and/or research protocols for the detection of various subjects such as pathogenic bacteria, viruses, or fungi; 2) preparing technical reports in accordance with laboratory accreditation requirements; and 3) following standardized molecular biology techniques and procedures within a laboratory. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-11). Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
